Tate-DeFreitas, Lupoe lead Hampton past North Carolina Central

DURHAM, N.C. – A strong first half from junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas, and a strong second half from sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe, led the Hampton University women’s basketball team to a 76-42 win over North Carolina Central on Monday at McDougald-McLendon Arena.

The Lady Pirates improved to 6-12 overall and 4-1 in MEAC play.

Tate-DeFreitas went 10-for-15 from the floor in scoring a game-high 24 points, while also grabbing five rebounds and four steals. Seventeen of those points came in the first half. Lupoe added 20 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.


Freshman guard K’lynn Willis added 10 points.

In setting a season high in points scored, the Lady Pirates shot a season-best 56.4-percent (31-for-55) from the floor, hitting four of 10 3-pointers and 10 of 13 free throws. Hampton turned 26 NCCU turnovers into 31 points.

Kristin Askew led NCCU with 16 points.

The Lady Pirates will return to the Convocation Center on Saturday to take on Savannah State at 4 p.m.

Spartans Fall on the road to North Carolina A&T State

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Aprill McRae recorded a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds, and host North Carolina A&T scored 26 points off 28 Norfolk State turnovers in a 64-53 Lady Aggies' win on Monday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.

Christina Carter added 10 points for the Aggies (8-9, 4-2 MEAC), who held NSU (0-16, 0-6) to 34.5 percent shooting. Senior guard Brehanna Daniels scored a career-high 12 points and sophomore forward Kayla Roberts also had 12 for the Spartans.

Dominique Harper scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter. Freshman guard Yazmen Hannah added eight points in just 11 minutes of action. Sophomore center Shayla Tanner had her second straight solid defensive performance, registering career highs in rebounds (nine) and blocks (six) while also finishing with two steals. She now has 10 blocked shots in the last two games.

Roberts also blocked two shots and grabbed eight rebounds for NSU, which topped the Lady Aggies 43-42 on the glass. A&T outscored NSU 36-16 in points in the paint and scored 22 second-chance points.

NSU returns home for its next two games, starting with a 4 p.m. matchup with South Carolina State on Saturday at Echols Hall.

Subritzky Leads UMES to 63-56 Win Over SC State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Moengaroa Subritzky scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, to lead the Maryland Eastern Shore women’s basketball team to a 63-56 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State on Monday night at the Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center.

Ashleigh Outler (15 points) and Brittany Drumgoole (14 points) each came off the bench to score in double figures for SC State (7-9, 3-3MEAC). Starters Jasmine Coleman and JuQuanna Murray each grabbed a game-high five rebounds.

SC State hits the road this weekend to play at Norfolk State at 4 p.m. on Saturday and at Hampton at 5 p.m. on Monday.

Hendrix has career day as Savannah State falls to Delaware State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix scored a career-high 27 points as the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (5-11, 2-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) fell to Delaware State University (5-12, 2-2 MEAC) to end its season-long five game homestand in Tiger Arena Monday night.

Hendrix shot 9-for-16 from the floor, including shooting 5-for-10 from the 3-point line, and shot 4-for-6 from the free throw line with three rebounds and two assists.  The Carrollton, Ga., native has scored 712 career points, which moves her tied for eighth place in school history in the Division I era with Jasmine Kirkland, who played from 2010-14.

Junior guard Rhianna Warren also scored a career-high with 15 points and tied a career-high with three assists and with three steals, while junior center Tiyonda Davis led the team with 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, and added five points.  Junior forward Jeremica Edwards added six points and six rebounds.

The Lady Hornets had four players to score more than two points and five players score overall.  Mikah Aldridge led DSU with 25 points on 10-for-15 shooting with three assists and four steals, while Amber Bogard added 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting with three blocks and four rebounds.  NaJai Pollard led the team with seven rebounds and added 10 points.

The Lady Tigers travel to Hampton, Va., to face Hampton University (6-12, 4-1 MEAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. to start a four-game roadstand.
