Howard and Coleman pace South Carolina State to win

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Senior guard Amber Howard  led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points and senior forward Jasmine Coleman  added 10 and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead South Carolina State to a 61-48 triumph over Delaware State Saturday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest.

Senior Toni Grier and sophomores Ashleigh Outler and Brittany Drumgoole added eight points each in the victory, which lifted the Lady Bulldogs to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the league.

Jahmia Bradley had eight rebounds to go with four points, and Grier and freshman JaQuanna Murray grabbed seven boards each for South Carolina State, which enjoyed a huge 58-29 edge on the boards.

Redshirt senior Amber Bogard, who poured in a game-high 19 points, was the only Lady Hornet in double figures. Freshman NaJai Pollard added eight points, while Bobbi Floyd and Mikah Aldridge chipped in seven each in the loss, which dropped Delaware State to 4-12 and 1-2 in the MEAC. Floyd, who came off the bench, has six rebounds to lead the Lady Hornets on the glass.

South Carolina State returns to the court Monday when they host Maryland Eastern Shore in a league doubleheader, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates bounce back with win over Aggies

GREENSBORO, N.C. – In what was often a defensive struggle Saturday afternoon, the Hampton University women’s basketball team got back into the win column by defeating North Carolina A&T 55-52 at the Corbett Sports Center.

The Lady Pirates improved to 5-12 overall and 3-1 in MEAC play.

Freshman guard K’lynn Willis led all scorers with a career-high 19 points – 16 of which came in the second half – going 5-for-12 from the floor and hitting all eight of her free throws. Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas added 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates shot 32.7-percent (18-for-55) from the floor and went 1-for-16 from behind the arc. Hampton was also 18-for-25 (72.0-percent) from the free throw line.

Hampton scored 15 points off of 17 Aggie turnovers.

Aprill McRae led the Aggies with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will be in Durham, N.C. to take on North Carolina Central on Monday at 6 p.m.

Davis leads Savannah State past Maryland Eastern Shore

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior center Tiyonda Davis led the Savannah State University women’s basketball team with 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocks as the Lady Tigers (5-10, 2-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (3-13, 1-3 MEAC) in the MEAC Championship game rematch from last season in Tiger Arena Saturday.

Davis shot 7-for-10 from the field and added two assists.  Over the last two games, the Athens, Ga., native averaged 13.0 points per game on 13-for-17 (.765) shooting from the floor and 8.5 rebounds per game with 13 blocks, four assists and two steals.

Junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw added nine points on 4-for-6 shooting with three rebounds and three steals, while junior forward Jeremica Edwards and sophomore guard Lauryn Fields added eight points each.  Edwards shot 4-for-7 from the field with six rebounds, while Fields shot 3-for-4 from the floor with three assists.

Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix added seven points, three rebounds and team-best five assists, while sophomore guard Kilah Nixon added five points and three rebounds.

The Lady Hawks were led by Taryana Kelly with eight points and nine rebounds, while Ciani Byrom and Keyera Eaton each added six points and Alexi Udoji added seven rebounds and four points.

The Lady Tigers finish their five-game homestand on Monday against Delaware State (4-12, 1-2 MEAC) at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.

Jones Seals 63-62 Win for Lady Eagles over Norfolk State

DURHAM, N.C. – Junior guard Morgan Jones scored a career-high 25 points and came up with a huge steal in the final minute before swishing a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to propel the North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team to a 63-62 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) triumph over visiting Norfolk State University Saturday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Jones netted her career-high 25 points on 9 of 19 accuracy from the floor, including four 3-pointers, and 3 of 4 precision from the charity stripe. The Stockbridge, Georgia, product also matched her best theft total in a game by coming up with four steals against the Spartans.

Both NCCU seniors scored in double figures. Tisha Dixon posted 14 points on a sizzling 7 of 8 shooting from the floor. Askew tallied 11 points and handed out five assists.

A trio of Spartans scored 48 of NSU’s 62 points. Freshman Yazmen Hannah led the visitors with 17 points. Siobhan Beslow and Kiara Phillips followed with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

The roller coaster affair finished with nine ties and 12 lead changes.

Norfolk State (0-15, 0-5) remained winless on the season and are 0-3. The Lady Eagles improved to 5-2 against the Spartans at the NCAA Division I level (since 2007-08).

NCCU next hosts MEAC foe Hampton University on Monday at 6 p.m.

Florida A&M falls at home to Morgan State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A cold shooting night spelled doom for the FAMU Women’s Basketball team, as they dropped a tough 67-62 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home decision to visiting Morgan State at The Al Lawson Center Saturday evening.

Florida A&M (9-9, 3-2 MEAC) had a chance to grab a share of the conference lead with a victory, as previous leader Coppin State (2-1), fell 69-56 at Bethune-Cookman, but now fall into a three-way tie for fifth place with North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State, all at 3-2.

With the win, Morgan State (6-11, 4-1) grabbed sole possession of first place with Bethune-Cookman and Hampton a half-game back in second at 3-1, and Coppin State two games out in fourth at 2-1.

Senior Khaderja Young led FAMU with a double-double, scoring 21 points while pulling down 10 rebounds. Olivia Antilla finished with 13 points, and Alicia McCray added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Farrar Braennan led Morgan with 21 points, while the trio of Zuri White, Ivy Harrington and Danielle Robinson each scored 10 points, with White pulling down 20 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end.

The Lady Rattlers will look to make up some lost ground in the MEAC chase Monday evening as they host Coppin State at 6:00 p.m. at The Al Lawson Center.
