Lady Rattlers sweep past Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Senior outside hitter Christian Lyle led Savannah State University (0-19, 0-2 MEAC) volleyball team with eight kills as Florida A&M University (2-13, 2-0 MEAC) defeated the Lady Tigers 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-15) on Sunday in Willcox-Wiley Gym.

Lyle recorded a .429 hitting percentage and added four total blocks, including a solo block, while freshman outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile added six kills and had a .600 hitting percentage.  Freshman outside hitter Makayla Tam was third on the team with four kills and added two service aces.

Junior setter Caitylnn Masoe led the team with 12 assists and added three kills, a service ace, three digs and five total blocks, including two solo blocks, while freshman setter Briana Littlejohn added eight assists.  Junior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel led the team with six digs, while Washington added three digs. 

The Lady Rattlers were led by Ginna Lopez with 10 kills, Valeria Lopez with 23 assists and Valentina Carrasco with seven digs.

The Lady Tigers travels to North Carolina with a match against North Carolina A&T State on Friday at 7 p.m. in Greensboro and North Carolina Central on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Durham.

Moore’s big day not enough as Spartans fall to Lady Bears

NORFOLK, Va. – Despite a record-breaking day from senior Darcy Moore and a career afternoon from sophomore Hope Forsythe, the Norfolk State volleyball team was unable to hold on to an early lead in a 3-2 setback against Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.

The Spartans cruised through the first set in winning 25-11 over the Bears, who then won the second by a 25-22 score. The two teams battled to extra points in the third set before the Spartans prevailed, 31-29. Morgan State finished strong in the fourth set to win 25-21 and then led through the entire last stanza stanza in a 15-11 fifth-set win.

Moore finished the day with a school-record 57 assists, topping the previous record of 56 she set two years ago as a sophomore. Forsythe also had a big day, tallying career highs of 18 kills, 23 digs and four blocks.

The win improved Morgan State’s record to 5-11 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 1-14 and 0-2.

Keana Browne was one of four players for MSU in double figures in kills with 10, while Arianna Hayden tallied 15 kills and 13 digs. Evely Macedo (12 kills, 15 digs) and Samantha Prescott (12 kills, 11 digs) also ended the day with double-doubles.

Janay Frazier added 14 kills and 13 digs for NSU while hitting .393, with Clarke Tyler (12 kills, four blocks) and Dominique Parker (eight kills, three blocks) also chipping in.

Junior Alex Irizarry posted 15 digs to help NSU finish with a 78-69 advantage in that category for the match.

NSU finished one assist short of tying the school’s single-match record of 66.

The Spartans will next travel to UMES on Friday for their first MEAC road match of the year.

Hampton falls in five-set thriller to Coppin State

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University fought back from a 2-0 deficit Sunday afternoon in Holland Hall, forcing a fifth set, before Coppin State came away with a 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 16-25, 32-34, 15-8) victory.

The Lady Pirates fell to 0-15 (0-2 MEAC) on the season.

Reeana Richardson led the Lady Pirates with a career-high 28 kills, committing only six errors to hit .431 for the match. Richardson also had a team-high two aces, along with Mallory Beard. Lena Washington added a career-best 10 kills and seven blocks.

Tatyana Thomas went error-free in 10 attacks with five kills to hit a team-best .500.

Brianna Lilly had a season-high 51 assists, while Allysa Medina led the way with 13 digs on defense. Richardson added 10 digs for her first career double-double.

Cindy Okpegbue led Coppin State with 16 kills.

The Lady Pirates will head to Princess Anne, Md. on Saturday to take on Maryland Eastern Shore.

Howard knocks off Hornets in four sets

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Delaware State won the third set to stay alive in its MEAC opener against Howard, but the comeback fell short for a 3-1 loss to the Bison.

Howard won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-5 before the Hornets rebounded to win set three 26-24. The Bison took the fourth set 25-22 to claim the match.

Senior Jasmine Jackson led DSU with 11 kills and 14 digs to record her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season.

Jae Jackson and Nevershi Ellis added seven kills each, while Taylor Marshall and Ayanna Lee each contributed nine digs for the Hornets.

Howard’s Khaila Donaldson led all players with 20 kills. Morgan Marlbrough had a match-high 23 digs for the Bison.

Delaware State (2-13; 0-1 MEAC) will be idle for the next 12 days before returning to action on Oct. 9 against MEAC rival Coppin State in the Hornets’ home opener. The Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness match begins at 6 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
