Hampton's Brown wins individual crown at Greensboro Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Hampton University senior Ce’aira Brown won the women’s individual crown at the 32nd annual Greensboro Invitational, which was held Saturday afternoon at Hagan Stone Park.

Brown completed the 5K course in 18:36.60 to set the top time.

She last won an individual race last season, when she took the top spot in the Virginia Union Panther Classic by running a personal-best 17:32.00.

It is her second career individual cross country title.

Kayla Key was the second Lady Pirates to finish in the top 20, coming in 18th after running a 20:24.10 in her first meet of the season. Kaylor Murray, making her 2015 debut, just missed out on the top 20, finishing 21st with a 20:39.10.

Ashley Modeste was 41st with a 21:27.40, and Kanitra Hatton ran a 22:59.50 to come in 76th.

The Lady Pirates finished sixth in the team standings with 141 points. The UNC Chapel Hill Club won the women’s team title with 43 points.

On the men’s side, Stanley Davis paced the Pirates with a 28:43.50 to come in 30th overall. Quentin Morales-Perryman completed the 8K course in 28:51.70 to finish 34th, while Eric Ellis was 44th after turning in a 29:22.30.

Rayon Black ran a 30:11.90 to finish 69th, while Christopher Roundtree was 73rd with a 30:15.00.

The Pirates were seventh in the men’s team standings with 196 points. The N.C. State Club took the men’s team title with 24 points.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Cary, N.C. on Saturday for the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge.

Three PRs Highlight NCCU at Greensboro Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Gregory Coward finished 13th overall out of 170 runners to pace the North Carolina Central University men’s cross country team to upper half finish in the 2015 Greensboro Cross Country Invitational at Hagan Stone Park Saturday.

The Eagles posted an eighth place team result out of 17 teams in the men’s wave. The Lady Eagles also competed on the day and they were the fourth and final NCAA Division I university to race out of 19 women’s teams.

Coward trail-blazed the nearly five-mile course in an 8k personal record (PR) time of 27:45 to finishing in the top 7-percent of the field. He has led NCCU in all three fall races this season.

Sophomore Jedrek Higgins and junior Deandre James also crossed the finish line in 8k PR times for the Eagles. Higgins secured 45th place overall with a time of 29:23 and James punched in with a time of 29:46, which was good for 56th.

Orane Morais (31:25) and Phillip Robinson-Hayes (32:34) provided NCCU’s final two top-5 scoring times.

On the women’s side, sophomore Shania Nicely topped the Lady Eagles endurance runners with a team-best time of 22:55. Nicely finished 33rd out of 47 DI harriers, four spots ahead of senior teammate Christa Landy (24:17).

Freshmen Jaleesa Smoot (25:26) and Starbesha Satterwhite (26:48) both took considerable time off their benchmark 5k marks from a week earlier. Sophomore Lovasia (26:46) clocked a time between her two rookie teammates.

NCCU will continue its sprint around central North Carolina at the 2015 Robert Shumake HBCU Cross Country Challenge at the Great American Cross Country Festival that will be competed at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Saturday, Oct. 3 (men’s 8k at 9:30 a.m. followed by the women’s 5k at 10:05 a.m.).
