UMES strong against tough field at Cappy Anderson Invite

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — For their annual Cappy Anderson Invitational, Hawks cross country coach Ernest Barrett lined up a tougher challenge for his team, hosting teams like Navy and Seton Hall, along with some MEAC schools known to pose a threat on occasion as well.

Although Navy would win both races handily, the Hawks were the next most impressive team, holding their own for a pair of second place finishes.

Scoring for the men’s team began with freshman Jordan Leon who finished the 8k event in 12th with a time of 25:34.47—the first non-Navy runner to reach the finish line. He was immediately followed by sophomore Stanley Meli in 13th place at 25:37.44. In his first race of the season, sophomore Oussama Chouati finished third among Hawks with a time of 25:56.23, good for 18th. Senior Mark Tuwie came in 22nd with a time of 26:28.17 and sophomore Donovan Mundy was right behind with a time of 26:28.60 for 23rd place.

Ryan McCoy of Navy won the race with a 24:55.72.

The Lady Hawks were led by junior Jennaya Hield who took 15th with a time of 19:22.99 in the 5k race. Freshman Yaminah Smith was right behind her with a time of 19:25.20 in 16th. Junior Rachel Halmon was also competitive with her fellow Hawks, taking a time of 19:30.18 along with her 18th place finish. Senior Jheniel Kelly registered a 19:42.76 to finish 22nd, and sophomore Dypna Umunakwe rounded out the scoring with a 32nd place time of 20:18.42.

Just as they did in the men’s match, Navy swept the women’s race as well, coming in first with 15 points. UMES’ 64 points was good enough for second.

Kelley Robinson of Navy won the women’s 5k with a time of 18:17.11.

The Hawks rest their legs for a weekend before getting back on course October 3rd, when they will travel to Smyrna, Del. for the DSU Farm Run Invitational.
