Short, Palmer Carry Radford Past Norfolk State
NORFOLK, Va. – The duo of Megan Short and Maddie Palmer combined for 23 kills to carry Radford past the Norfolk State volleyball team, 3-0, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.
NSU’s first home match of the season saw the Highlanders use a couple of big runs to take the first set, 25-12, before the Spartans gave them a run for their money in a 25-22 second-set win. Radford finished the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the last set.
Palmer tallied 13 kills on a .400 attack percentage with seven digs, two blocks and two service aces. Short hit a blistering .643 with 10 kills and four blocks for Radford (6-4). The Highlanders hit .356 for the match.
NSU (1-9) was led senior Angie Darcus, who finished with 11 kills. Sophomore Clarke Tyler had a solid outing with seven kills and two blocks while hitting .462.
NSU hit .124 for the match, although Radford had a sizeable advantage in service aces (9-3) and blocks (9-2). The Spartans posted a 40-36 edge in digs, led by junior Alex Irizarry with 12 and Forsythe with 10.
Norfolk State heads to James Madison this weekend for the JMU Invitational.

Winthrop Tops NCCU in an Eagle Showdown
DURHAM, N.C. – Junior transfer Jennifer Allison had her most productive match of the season for host North Carolina Central University in a 3-0 non-conference loss to Winthrop University on Tuesday evening in the L.T. Walker Complex.
Winthrop (4-7 Overall) won the battle of the Eagles by set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21 to extend its win streak to four matches. NCCU (0-13) remained winless on the year.
Allison provided three kills on six attempts for a .500 hitting percentage over the final two sets to go along with one dig, one assist and one solo block.
Junior outside hitter Kelsey Murphy continued her strong play for the Lady Eagles with a team-high 10 kills. Murphy has led the Maroon and Gray in kills in 11 of 13 matches.
Junior Casey Curran totaled 27 assists and had both of NCCU’s service aces. Senior Kelly Rossip and freshman Sydney Sumner each provided five kills. Senior Marilyn Sherbondy added 13 digs.
Junior Annelies Dokter tallied a match-high 11 kills to pace the Winthrop Eagles attack. Senior Hjordis Eiriksdottir and sophomore Nikki Drost chipped in eight and six spikes, respectively.
Freshman Madilyn McCarty had a quality performance from the setter position with 22 assists, four block assists and three kills on five swings. Drost and freshman Carlie Skelton totaled 12 digs apiece.
NCCU plays its fourth consecutive weekend tournament when the Lady Eagles compete in the James Madison University Invitational on Sept. 18-19. NCCU will play Georgetown University (1 PM) and Norfolk State University (5 PM) on Friday and the host Dukes (10 AM) on Saturday.

Savannah State Falls to Georgia Southern
STATESBORO, Ga. – Senior outside hitter Christian Lyle led the team with six kills, with a .462 hitting percentage and with four total blocks as Savannah State University volleyball team fell to Georgia Southern 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-14) Tuesday night at Hanner Fieldhouse.
Freshman setter Briana Littlejohn led the team with 10 assists, while junior libero Alexis Washington led the team with 11 digs.
Junior middle blocker Gabrielle Nathaniel and freshman outside hitter Chinenye Ofodile each added four kills, while junior setter Caitlynn Masoe added seven assists and seven digs and sophomore outside hitter Zariya Thomas added two kills and six digs.
The Eagles were led by Stephanie Spencer with 12 kills and added a .333 hitting percentage and 11 digs, Katie Bange with 21 assists and Alex Beecher with 13 digs.

Hampton falls in four sets to VCU
RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University volleyball team fell in four sets to Virginia Commonwealth at the Stuart C. Siegle Center on Tuesday evening, as the Rams won 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-13, 25-19).
Reeana Richardson led the Lady Pirates with 10 kills, reaching double-digit kills for the third straight match and four out of the last five. Richardson also had four aces and two blocks. Allysa Medina added eight kills and five digs, while Lena Washington added seven kills.
Kyndall Nicholas had five kills on nine attacks, going error-free to hit .556, and added two blocks.
Tatyana Thomas had a team-high four blocks, while Alexandra Erhart recorded a team-high 19 assists. Brianna Lilly had a team-high eight digs to go along with 15 assists and three service aces.
The Lady Pirates (0-10) hit a season-high .202 for the match, registering a season-high 37 kills and tying a season low with 16 errors. Hampton led 9-8 in service aces and 6-2 in team blocks.
Sahbria McLetchie had 21 kills and 11 digs to lead the Rams.
The Lady Pirates will close out non-conference play this Friday and Saturday at the N.C. State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, in a tournament field that will include the likes of Tennessee, N.C. State, and Campbell.
