Savannah State drops home opener to East Carolina

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University drops its home opener to East Carolina 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-7) on Sunday at Willcox-Wiley Gym. 

Junior setter Caitlynn Masoe led the team with eight kills and added four assists and eight digs, while freshman setter Briana Littlejohn led the team with nine assists and added two kills and three digs and junior libero Alexis Washington had 11 digs and added three assists.

The Lady Pirates were led by Ashton Mares with 11 kills and had a .375 hitting percentage and added six digs, Sabrina Gonzalez with 18 assists and added two kills, eight digs and two block assists, and Erika Figueroa with 11 digs.

Hornets close out Towson Invite with loss

TOWSON, Md. --- After completing a five-set match 17 hours earlier, the Delaware State volleyball team couldn’t keep up with host Towson this morning, falling to the Tigers 3-0 on the final day of the TU Invitational at SECU Arena. The scores were 25-15, 25-12 and 25-13. Each team was playing its fourth match in three days.

DSU had a season low hitting percentage of -.079 in the contest. The Hornets had 24 errors and just 17 kills on 89 attacks in the three sets.

Towson posted a .337 attack percentage, collecting 43 kills and just 13 errors on 95 attempts.

NaKia Jones led the Hornets with six kills, while Jasmine Jackson had five. Marisol Arredondo and Ayanna Lee tied for the team high with seven digs each.

Arredondo also topped the Hornets with 10 assists.

Towson’s Joycelyn Kuilan led all players with 18 kills on 22 attempts (.773). Anna Holehouse had a match-high 11 digs for the Tigers.

DSU returns to action next weekend at the UMES Invitational in Princess Anne, Md.  The Hornets will face North Carolina A&T State in their tournament opener on Friday (Sep. 4) at 4 p.m.

Coppin State drops decision to host Towson

TOWSON, Md. - It's all about the process at this point in the season for Coppin State first-year volleyball coach Kyetta May.

Even though the Eagles dropped the final game of the Towson Invitational to host Towson, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena, there were encouraging signs that they can continue to build upon.

Senior setter Chelsee Sauni cemented a strong weekend with a match-high 27 assists and team best seven digs. Her overall weekend effort earned her a spot on the all-tournament team for the second straight year.

Senior Kendra Ireigbe joined the milestone club when she became Coppin State's all-time leader in blocks at 3:13 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Ireigbe had six blocks along with five kills. For her career she has 244 blocks. She delivered a consistently strong effort over the weekend as she finished with 25 kills and 12 blocks.

Senior Cindy Okpegbue led Coppin State with 10 kills, the 44th time in her career she has finished with double-digit kills during a match. She led the Eagles over the weekend with 35 kills.

Freshmen Samantha Polk and Marlena Guice had the Tigers on the run during the match as they combined for 12 kills. Polk finished with a career-best seven kills while Guice enjoyed a .417 hitting percentage.

Leading Towson (4-1 overall) was Haley Pa'akaula (12 kills) and Lindsay Flaherty (11). Anna Holehouse had 13 digs and Aimee Schubert registered 23 assists. The Tigers also had 13 service aces.

Coppin State returns to action Friday night when it plays Cal-Poly at the Baylor University Tournament at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The Eagles will also meet Baylor and Sam Houston State as well during the tournament.
