Six Spartans Earn VaSID Academic All-State Team Honors

NORFOLK, Va. – Six Norfolk State student-athletes, including five seniors, were honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors this week when they were named to the VaSID Academic All-State Team for the 2014-15 academic year.

Tennis players Igor Braga, Daniel Grauel, Krystal Scott and Andrea Macchiavello joined softball player Alina Moriarty and baseball player Josh Vales on NSU’s six-person team. All except Macchiavello were seniors during the 2014-15 athletics season.

Braga earned academic all-state accolades for the third straight year, while Moriarty and Macchiavello were named for the second straight season.

• Andrea Macchiavello, Jr., Boca Raton, Fla., 3.87, Business Entrepreneurship, Women's Tennis
• Alina Moriarty, Sr., Chesapeake, Va., 3.75, Biology, Softball
• Krystal Scott, Sr., Gold Coast, Australia, 3.91, Kinesiotherapy, Women's Tennis
• Josh Vales, Sr., Currituck, N.C., 3.74, Nutrition, Baseball

 

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 GPA and be a sophomore or higher in standing. Schools were limited to nominating six student-athletes.

Braga and Scott were this year’s NSU Male and Female Athletes of the Year for having the highest GPAs among their respective genders, while all six had some of the highest GPAs in the department. They were each named to the MEAC All-Academic Team as well. Grauel and Moriarty earned second-team all-MEAC honors in their respective sports, with Moriarty also garnering a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District Team.
