NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton University basketball legend Rick Mahorn will be inducted into the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame in the coming fall as part of the 2015 class.
Mahorn is the Pirates’ all-time leader in scoring and rebounding, having tallied 2,418 points and 1,465 rebounds from 1976-80. He averaged 20.3 points per game for his collegiate career, an all-time program best, and Mahorn’s 12.3 rebounds per contest mark the second-best career average.
He holds three of the top four single-season point totals in Hampton history – including a program-best 855 points in the 1979-80 season, when Mahorn averaged 27.6 points per game. In his sophomore, junior, and senior seasons, Mahorn led the team in both scoring and rebounding.
Mahorn also averaged 15.8 rebounds that season, the third-best single-season average in school history.
He scored a school-record 48 points against St. Augustine’s in 1980, and Mahorn’s career .534 shooting percentage is ninth in program history.
He was the 1979 CIAA Player of the Year, and Mahorn was All-CIAA for three straight years. In 1980, Mahorn was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets. Mahorn played in the NBA from 1980-99, averaging 6.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
He was on the Detroit Pistons team that won the 1989 NBA championship.
Also among the 2015 class will be former Old Dominion basketball coach Sonny Allen, football standout D.J. Dozier, Granby High baseball star Hank Foiles, Norfolk State Univerisy football standout Andrew Heidelberg, and former Norfolk Academy soccer standout Angela Hucles.
