TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Former FAMU golfers Shapherd Archie III and Wesley Yates made an impressive debut on the Golf Channel's reality show "Altered Course" last night. The duo, dubbed the "Georgia Boys," mastered the first challenge of the season pretty easily.
The show features extraordinary hole layouts, exceeding 700 yards, while racing against time. The show will challenge the players’ golf skills, physical fitness and strength in strategy. Filmed in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the course features enormous inclines and declines.
Last night's challenge was a long hole where the golfer had to tee off from an elevated green and run down to where their drives landed. They then had to pitch or chip into a checkpoint area before taking the next shot over trees to a severely lower elevation. The hole had water along the right side and a sand trap protecting the left side. The eight teams had to play alternate shots and finish under a time limit, with a one stroke penalty for each period exceding the allotted time.
The team of Archie and Yates used their strengths to perfection to cruise to a victory. Yates, whose strength is driving, unleashed an unthinkable drive. It went 300 yards and stopped in the checkpoint area. That saved a major stroke to start things off. Archis hit an approach shot to the left of the green, strategizing to take the water out of play. Yates chipped up on the green and the duo two-putted to finish with a score of five. That scored bested all competitors in the first day's challenge. Because of their top finish, they were able to watch the other teams battle for placement by embarking in another challenge.
