Wildcats third to open PGA Minority Championships

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Ian Clark fired an opening round 2-over-par 74 on Friday, leading the Bethune-Cookman men’s golf team in scoring at the 29th PGA Minority Collegiate Championships at the PGA Golf Club. The action is taking place on the famed Wanamaker Course.

The 2015 edition of the Championship features more than 220 players representing 50 colleges and universities, 12 countries and two U.S. territories. The 54-hole Championship concludes Sunday.

Ian Clark, a sophomore from Somerset, England, has waited until the second half of the spring season to play some of his best golf for the Maroon and Gold. The Davis & Elkins transfer has led the Wildcats in the previous two tournaments coming into what is now his first PGA Minority Collegiate Championship event.

Florida A&M’s men’s team, which opened with an 11-over-par 299 total on the Wanamaker Course, owns a two-stroke lead over Alabama State University. Meanwhile, the two-time defending Champion Bethune-Cookman is in third place at 307.

Clark’s 2-over 74 helped B-CU to its current third place showing, entering Saturday just six strokes off second place.

B-CU junior Leon Fricker performed well on Friday, turning in a 4-over-par 76 scorecard.

Daniel Kovari, a junior from Budapest, Hungary, shot a 6-over 78 in his first 18 holes of his very first PGA Minority Championship. He was followed in the B-CU scoring by junior Jackson Kneeshaw who fired an opening-round 79.

The final B-CU scorer was freshman Alvaro Ramirez, firing an opening-day 84.

Play continues on Saturday with the second round beginning at 8 a.m.

The PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship has elevated golf in minority colleges and universities by providing opportunities for players to compete in a national championship. In 2006, the PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management by the National Minority Collegiate Golf Scholarship Fund.
