Hampton's season ends as B-CU advances to title game

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University softball team's run through the consolation bracket of the MEAC Tournament ended Friday evening with a 5-0 loss to Bethune-Cookman at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

The Lady Pirates finished the 2015 season at 22-26.

Both of Hampton's losses in the MEAC Tournament this season came to Bethune-Cookman, which will take on Florida A&M for the title on Saturday.

Bethune-Cookman scored twice in the top of the first inning – first on a stolen base and a throwing error that scored Calesha Shelley, then on an RBI single from Geena Capitini that brought in Mariah Davis.

Capitini singled home Sophia Ortega in the third inning to put B-CU up 3-0.

Ortega then added a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Pirates' best scoring chance came in the bottom of the third inning, when Margaret Wilkins singled with two outs before Diamond Ponds and Taylor McCoy each singled to load the bases.

But B-CU got out of the jam with a groundout to leave the bases loaded.

McCoy had two of the Lady Pirates' six hits.
