ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Alex Sandage drew a bases loaded walk with two outs as the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers reached the title game for the second straight year with a 2-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman in a winner’s bracket game on Friday afternoon in the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship.
Florida A&M, the No. 3 seed from the South, is the defending tournament champion. The Lady Rattlers advance to Saturday’s championship game at 1 p.m. Bethune-Cookman (20-28) falls into the elimination bracket and will face the winner of Savannah State-Hampton at 6 p.m. Friday.
The Lady Rattlers (17-36) opened the scoring in the third inning as Sandage reached on an error to begin the frame. Whitney Farris and Jessica Nathan registered back-to-back singles to load the bases. Sandage scored on Toni Anderson’s sacrifice fly.
Bethune-Cookman answered with a run in the fifth as Bryanna Campos singled down the left field line to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice but. She came around to score when Mariah Davis reached on an error.
In the sixth, the Lady Wildcats got two quick outs before Miesha McBride and Raven Mosley were hit by pitches, and Amanda Weaver drew a walk to load the bases. Sandage worked the count full before taking ball four and plating the go-ahead run.
Kenya Periera scattered five hits and surrendered one unearned run in seven innings to grab the win.
Sabrina Anguiano took the loss as she gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts.
