ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Amanda Hallman pitched her first shutout of the 2015 season as Savannah State (S1) advanced in the consolation bracket of the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament with an 8-0 win over North Carolina A&T State (S4) in an elimination game.
SSU will play Hampton (N3) in an elimination game at 3 p.m. on Friday. The winner will face the loser of a Bethune-Cookman Florida A&M game in the winners bracket. The deepest SSU has been in the annual tournament was in 2013; Hampton eliminated them in the semifinals.
Amanda Hallman pitched a full 6.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts. She faced 24 batters in her eighth pitching win of the season.
From the plate, SSU spread out 12 hits over the six innings as N.C A&T State struggled from the plate with only three hits in the game.
After two scoreless innings, SSU opened up a lead in the bottom of the third inning. Torrian Wright was walked with loaded bags, scoring Alexis Singleton who reached on a single. Tia Bolden singled through the left side to score Wright and Amanda Hallman, lifting SSU to a 3-0 lead.
Amanda Hallman doubled in the fourth inning, platting Brianna Harris who reached on a single to notch SSU up 4-0.
In the fifth inning, Bolden again singled to left field, scoring Amber Hallman who reached on a single. SSU racked up four hits in the fifth, but only managed to score a single run. Into the sixth, they led 5-0.
After a fly out and a ground out from N.C. A&T to open the sixth, Ama. Hallman got Jillian Nobles to strikeout looking to end the inning.
Amanda Hallman and Wright were both walked to reach in the bottom of the sixth. Amb. Hallman followed that with a single through the right side that scored younger sister Ama. Hallman. Later, Wright stole home and Amber Hallman, the eighth run, advanced to scoring position.
Antonette Smith doubled to left-center, scoring Amb. Hallman to end the game due to run-rule.
Maiven McKnight pitched a full 5.0 innings, picking up her ninth loss of the season. She allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits with six walks and a single strikeout. There were no errors committed by either team in the game.
Bolden led the Lady Tigers from the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Harris went 3-for-4 on the day and Singleton, Amber Hallman and Smith each registered two hits in the win. Raven Gray, Nobles and Janika May each had a hit for the Lady Aggies.
N.C. A&T State ends the 2015 campaign with a 15-31 overall record. SSU improves to 22-16 on the year.
NCAT head coach Kenya Peters and graduate assistant coach Megan Uhrman finish the season with a loss to their old head coach, Jose Gonzalez. Peters was an SSU assistant coach for two years. Uhrman was a four-year letterman for SSU softball.
