NORFOLK, Va. – Senior outfielder Alina Moriarty of the Norfolk State softball team was named to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-District® softball team on Thursday afternoon, as selected and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Moriarty was one of three outfielders and one of 12 players overall voted to the District 3 team for NCAA Division I. A native of Chesapeake, Va., she is currently majoring in biology with a 3.73 GPA. Moriarty is a member of the NSU Honors College, Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Beta Kappa Chi, the Golden Key International Honor Society and Alpha Lambda Delta.
She also became the second NSU player to be named to the All-MEAC team in three separate seasons. Moriarty earned second-team honors this season at outfield after being voted to the first team in 2013 and the second team last year at second base. She batted .341 in 2015 in 40 games with 26 runs, eight doubles, three triples, five home runs and 23 RBI.
She wrapped up her career first all-time at NSU in hits (206), doubles (39) and at bats (601) and also ranked in the top 5 in total bases, home runs, sacrifice flies, RBI, games played and games started.
The academic all-district teams are divided into eight geographic regions. NSU’s district includes Division I schools in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee. All of the first-team district honorees are eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America® first-, second- and third-teams that will be chosen and announced by early June.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
