NORFOLK, Va. – Junior guard Jeff Short and junior forward RaShid Gaston were voted to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State team that was announced late Tuesday afternoon. Both players earned a spot on the second team.
They were two of 10 players to be honored with either first or second-team designation. The VaSID University Division consists of all 14 NCAA Division-I institutions in the state. Voting was done by sports information and athletic communication professionals from all collegiate divisions throughout the state.
Short earned first-team All-MEAC and first-team NABC All-District 15 honors this season after finishing second in the MEAC in scoring at 19.1 points per game. He ranked in the top 30 in the nation in scoring and also added 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.9 steals per contest. Short also ranked in the top 10 in the conference in field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
Gaston earned second-team NABC All-District 15 accolades this year after ranking second in the league in rebounding (9.6) and field goal percentage (62.6). He compiled 18 double-doubles this season while averaging 15.5 points, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. He ranked fourth in the nation in shooting percentage and eighth in double-doubles as well as eighth in the MEAC in scoring.
NSU finished 20-14 overall this year and stood second in the league’s regular season standings at 12-4. The Spartans made their fourth straight postseason appearance after competing in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament.
Marcus Thornton of William & Mary was voted the VaSID Player of the Year, while Justin Bibbs of Virginia Tech was named the Rookie of the Year. Virginia’s Tony Bennett took home Coach of the Year honors.
Short and Gaston comprise two of next year’s three-man senior class for the Spartan program. NSU will return seven players from this year’s squad and has already signed five for the 2015 recruiting class.
