PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The North Carolina Central University golf squad posted a score of 291 in the final round of the 29th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday at The PGA Club to break the school’s 18-hole team scoring record.
The Eagles broke the previous record by three strokes. The 294 team total was recorded in 2009 at the same event and on the same course – the famed Wanamaker.
On Sunday, Sumner Tate carded his best round of the season, a 1-under-par 71 to top NCCU. Jordan Bohannon also tallied a season-best score of even-par 72, while Garreth Carpenter and Zane Lewis each tallied 74 (+2). Michael Wilson added an 82.
The team’s record-breaking performance on Sunday was 20 strokes less than Saturday’s team score of 311 and a 31-shot improvement over Friday’s 322. NCCU’s three-round total of 924 ranks as the fourth-best 54-hole team total in school history.
