Wildcats fall back to fifth at PGA Minority Championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Ian Clark continues to pace the Bethune-Cookman men’s golf team after second round action on Saturday as part of the 29th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships at the PGA Golf Club. Men’s action is taking place on the famed Wanamaker Course.

The 2015 edition of the Championship features more than 220 players representing 50 colleges and universities, 12 countries and two U.S. territories. The 54-hole Championship concludes Sunday.

Clark, a sophomore from Somerset, England, fired a second-round 5-over-par 77, sitting atop the B-CU scoring with a 151, respectively, after the first 36 holes of the annual tournament.

However, it was junior Daniel Kovari who turned in the lowest scorecard of the day for the Maroon and Gold. The transfer from Jacksonville fired a second round 4-over 76, to place himself second on the team with a collective 154 scorecard through the opening two rounds.

B-CU top player for average on the year, junior Leon Fricker, fell a stroke behind Kovari after firing a round of 7-over-par 79 on Saturday. Classmate and countryman Jackson Kneeshaw (79-78=157) of Darlington, England, lowered his score by a stroke from Friday’s round of 79.

The final B-CU golfer is freshman Alvaro Ramirez (84-79=163), also lowering his scorecard in Saturday’s play with a 7-over 79.

As a team, two-time defending champion Bethune-Cookman (307-310) sits fourth in the men’s field with a 617 score.

Alabama State overtook Florida A&M for the top position heading into Championship Sunday.

The Hornets posted a 592 total, surging past first-round leader Florida A&M (606). The University of the Incarnate Word is third at 613, followed by Tennessee State (613).

Alabama State junior Branson Ferrier, who fired a 66 in the opening round, overcame three bogeys in his first round holes of the back nine of the Wanamaker Course Saturday. He eagled the par-5 16th holes on his way to a 2-under-par 70.

The PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship has elevated golf in minority colleges and universities by providing opportunities for players to compete in a national championship. In 2006, the PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management by the National Minority Collegiate Golf Scholarship Fund.
