N.C. Central Defeats Shaw, 7-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men’s tennis team won its second straight match with a 7-2 conquest of host Shaw University at Lions Park Thursday afternoon.
 
The Eagles’ fifth win in their last seven duel’s leveled the squads overall record at 8-8. The Shaw Bears suffered their second straight setback to dip to 8-5.
 
Freshman Kert Kilumets (6-2, 6-0) had the most dominating NCCU performance only losing two games at No. 1 singles. Senior Daniil Gerasimov (6-1, 6-4) also prevailed in straight sets just one court over for the Eagles. Sophomore William East had to work harder in his third tier tilt before finally finishing off his competition 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
 
NCCU senior Tamina Kienka (4-6) held a sizable 6-1, 2-0 lead in his match before the Bears No. 5 player had to retire. The Eagles also picked up a forfeit win at No. 6 as Shaw only had an active roster of five netters.
 
NCCU will host Boston College on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The two Eagles tennis programs will be playing early before BC plays an ACC duel at Duke University in the afternoon.

Men’s Tennis Falls at Home to Georgetown, 4-1
 
BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State men’s tennis suffered a 4-1 setback to the visiting Georgetown Hoyas on Thursday afternoon at MSU’s Tennis Courts.
 
MSU dropped its fourth home match of the season and avoided a shutout as a result of Duk Young-Park’s 6-2, 6-4 lone Bear victory over Alex Tropiano at the No. 2 position.
 
Park improved his single’s record to 6-3 overall, and is 6-1 against No. 2 singles.
 
In doubles play, the duo of Beatty and John Brosens were victorious over Duk Young-Park and Evan Ward, 7-6(6), from the No. 1 spot. Andrew Dottino and Shane Korber took down Andre and Treajh Ferguson, 6-4, from the No. 2 slot.
 
The Bears return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action when they host the Howard Bison on Saturday, April 4th. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.

Delaware State Stings Lady Hawks

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – As the tennis season dwindles down, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Team looked to get rolling against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Delaware State (DSU). The squad fell to the Lady Hornets, 6-1, at Hawks Tennis Complex.

With the setback, UMES dropped to 0-8 (0-3 MEAC) overall while DSU improved to 4-0 (1-0 MEAC) on the season.

Despite the outcome, the Lady Hawks fought throughout the match. In singles play, Delaware-native Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington) earned four points before falling to the Lady Hornets’ Patrice Casey (6-2, 6-2). Other notable performances included Melequa King (Forestville, Md.), Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic), and Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) each registering a point in a losing effort.

Tomorrow (04/03), Maryland Eastern Shore goes to the Tidewater area to face two opponents. Next up, the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins at the Everett Tennis Center. Match time is 4 p.m. On Saturday (04/04), the Lady Hawks take on Hampton in MEAC play. First-serve at noon.
