SAVANNAH, Ga., April 23, 2015 – The Georgia Regents of Augusta men’s golf team leads the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Golf Championship by 13 strokes after the opening round on Friday at the Crosswinds Golf Club.
The Jaguars combined to shoot a 276 on the par-288 course through the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The tournament continues Friday and Saturday at the 6,748-yard, par-72 course.
GRU’s Broc Everett shot 5-under par 67 to take the early lead. Everett registered six birdies and one bogey to secure the top position. Three tied for second place with 3-under par 69, including Bethune-Cookman’s Ian Clark and GRU-Augusta’s Maverick Antcliff and Robin Petersson.
Clark finished with five birdies and two bogies to tie for second, while both Antcliff and Petersson registered four birdies and one bogey to hold one of the top four spots.
GRU’s Viktor Edin, B-CU’s Leon Fricker and Savannah State’s Brandon Neals completed the first day of competition at 1-under par 71 to tie for fifth.
Georgia Regents, an Associate Member of the MEAC, joined the conference in September. The program brings a wealth of success to the conference’s golf programs having won NCAA Division I national championships in in 2010 and 2011.
Savannah State is in second, shooting 1-over par 289. Bethune-Cookman sits in third place at 10-over par 298. Florida A&M (299), North Carolina Central (309), Maryland Eastern Shore (319) and Hampton (336) round out the field.
Play resumes Friday with the teams teeing off at 7:30 a.m.
The tournament champion and medalist receives and automatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Selection Show will air May 4 at 10 a.m. on the Golf Channel.
