Camels claim doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell University rode the arms of its two starting pitchers in defeating North Carolina Central University, 6-2 and 8-0 (5 innings), in a non-conference softball doubleheader at Littlejohn Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Camels (25-25 Overall) have won four straight games while the Lady Eagles (16-25) slip to 2-13 in April.
Senior starter Julia Callicutt took a perfect game into the sixth inning of game one before NCCU junior De’Onna Smith spoiled the no-hit bid with a solo home run to lead off the frame. Smith’s second dinger of the season flew over the centerfield fence starting NCCU’s comeback attempt.
Callicutt (12-8) ended the sixth-inning rally with one of her nine strikeouts.
Campbell scored five of its six runs in the third to pull ahead, which was highlighted by a freshman Melissa Tullar two-run homer. The Camels doubled up the Lady Eagles hit total, 8-4.
Sophomore Dominique Wilson, who had NCCU’s fourth hit with a leadoff single in the seventh, took the loss allowing six runs on six hits and four walks over six inning of work with three strikeouts.
Campbell sophomore starter Katie Baker never sniffed at a no-hitter in the nightcap giving up a leadoff single to Hargett but she was just as impressive as Callicutt not allowing another hit to NCCU in a five-inning shutout.
Casey Hargett, who has hit safely in four straight games, drew one of the Lady Eagles’ three bases on balls.
NCCU will play a single game at North Carolina State University to wrap up the road portion of its regular-season schedule on Thursday at 6 p.m.
