PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The Hampton University softball team dropped its series finale against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday at Hawk Field, as UMES won 4-3 on a walkoff.
The Lady Pirates (15-20, 7-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time in a month.
Hampton got on the board in the top of the second inning; after freshman Jada Fields () doubled to left center, junior Jessica Reiman hit a two-run home run to left field, to put the Lady Pirates up 2-0.
But UMES answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead on a bases-clearing double from Samantha Casarez.
Freshman Allyson Babinsack tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth with a double to left center field that brought home junior Taylor McCoy.
UMES opened the bottom of the seventh inning with three straight singles to load the bases, before Morgan King singled to left center field to bring in Ciara Schnyder to give the Lady Hawks the 4-3 win and the series.
Babinsack had two of Hampton’s six hits; Margaret Wilkins singled in the first inning for her 232nd career hit, giving her the program’s all-time career hits record.
Babinsack’s streak of nine straight winning decisions was snapped, despite five strikeouts.
The Lady Pirates will be in Lynchburg, Va. on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Liberty at 4 p.m. Both games will be shown live on ESPN3.
