NCCU splits double dip with Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior London Booker tossed a complete-game and sophomore Brianna Hampton drove in the winning runs with a three-run double to lead North Carolina Central University to a 4-1 victory in Saturday’s second game at Florida A&M University.

The Lady Rattlers knocked off the Lady Eagles, 3-1, in the opener. The two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) squads are scheduled to play the rubber game at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex on Sunday at 6 p.m. Schedule changes may occur with potential rain forecasted for Sunday. NCCU (16-23 Overall, 2-9 Conf.) will be looking for its first league series win in the two teams can play Sunday while FAMU (11-33, 4-4) will be trying to move over .500 in the league.

Sophomore starting pitcher Kenya Pereira limited NCCU to just two hits in leading the Lady Rattlers to the opening victory .Pereira (8-12) fanned nine Lady Eagles in her complete game performance.

NCCU put runners in scoring position in three innings but were only able to come through once with a sacrifice fly by senior Emerie Germ accounting for the visitors lone run. Junior Casey Hargett led off the sixth with NCCU’s second and final hit to center field before tagging up and scoring on Germ’s team-high 25th RBI.

Sophomore Dominique Wilson, who notched NCCU’s first base knock with a double into the left field gap to led off the second, had a quality start in the pitcher’s circle. Wilson (6-10) scattered just six hits over six innings in the losing effort.

Booker was one out away from her second shutout of the season but a RBI-single by Anderson spoiled her clean sheet in the nightcap. Booker (9-13) gave up six hits and three walks over her seven quality innings with one strikeout and her one run allowed was an unearned tally.

NCCU outhit the Lady Rattlers, 9-6, with Hampton and junior De’Onna Smith both collecting two base hits.

Lady Hawks split twinbill with Hampton

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team split their conference doubleheader with the Hampton Lady Pirates. Hampton picked up the win in game one, 6-3, but the Lady Hawks took game two, 5-1.

As a result, Maryland Eastern Shore moved to 6-24 (3-8 MEAC), while the Lady Pirates went to 15-19 (7-3 MEAC) on the season. Furthermore, UMES snapped a 13-game losing streak against Hampton, dating back to the 2011 season.

Freshman Adrienne Guerra was the workhorse for the Lady Hawks as she tossed two complete games. The California-product threw 14 innings with a combined 13 strikeouts in the pair of games, including 10 K’s in the game one loss.

In the second game, Guerra held Hampton to three hits and put UMES in a position to win. Offensively, the Lady Hawks manufactured five runs on seven hits. Allison Anderson and Kaitlyn Hitch each register two hits in the victory.

For Hampton, Jailynn Jackson pitched six innings with three strikeouts in the loss.

In the first game, lone senior Morgan King went 2-of-3 with a double and RBI. Anderson batted in the three-hole and recorded two RBIs in a losing effort.

For the Lady Pirates, Allyson Babinsack earned her 12th win of the season, going seven innings with eight strikeouts in the victory.

The rubber match begins 12 p.m. on Sunday at Hawks Field.

Hornets Keep Rolling, Sweep Norfolk State in Road Doubleheader

NORFOLK, Va. – The Delaware State softball team (13-21, 7-4 MEAC) continued its recent stretch of good play Saturday afternoon with a pair of road wins over the Norfolk State Spartans (9-21, 8-3 MEAC), beginning with a 11-2 six-inning victory, followed by a 14-9 triumph in game two.

With these victories, the Hornets pushed their winning streak to a season-high six, in addition to registering double digits runs and hits in every game during this stretch.  The Spartans, who sat atop of the MEAC North standings coming in, have now dropped four out of their last nine overall.

The Hornets went on to finish Saturday’s opener with 11 hits, led by Oro (three), Velez and infielder Jordan Stamps (two). Tara Tursellino, on the other end, settled down nicely to pick up the win, allowing seven hits, two walks and fanning two NSU batters.

In the second game, DSU tallied 19 hits with four recording at least three, led by Vanessa Washington’s 4-for-5 effort with four RBI, two runs and a double. Stamps, who is tied with Washington as DSU’s leader in home runs, went 3-for-5 with two runs and a game-high five RBI.  In the circle, Tursellino surrendered six hits, four earned runs, a walk and registered one K in the winning effort as a reliever.

The series concludes on Sunday with a noon start.
