S.C. State splits non-conference doubleheader with UMES

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The South Carolina State softball team fell 3-0 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore and then rebounded to win game two 14-4 on Thursday afternoon at Hawks Field.

In the first game, UMES’ Adrienne Guerra pitched a five-hit complete game while striking out 10 batters to pick up her fourth win of the season. Kierra Cromer fell to 2-6 on the year after an outing in which she gave up 10 hits and three earned runs in six innings.

SC State (8-20) came alive in the second game and pounded out a season-high 18 hits in the win. UMES (5-23) led 4-1 after the first inning, but the Lady Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning to tie the game at 4-all. After a scoreless third inning, SC State posted five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, while shutting out the Lady Hawks for the remainder of the game.

Kahla Caster was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI and a home run in game two. Tiara Lovejoy was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Unique Whitehurst went 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Deanna Sullivan was 2-for-3 with two walks, two RBI and one run.

Jareece Sayles was the winning pitcher after pitching a three-hit shutout in five innings in relief. Cromer faced five batters in the first inning and gave up five hits and four earned runs, but was relieved before recording an out.

SC State travels to Catonsville, Md. to take on the University of Maryland Baltimore County in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
