NSU's Roberts named VaSID Rookie of the Year

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State freshman forward Kayla Roberts was voted as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year as the top freshman among the state’s Division I programs, the organization announced on Monday.

In addition, senior guard Rae Corbo was named to the VaSID all-state second team.

Roberts, who also doubled as NSU’s first-ever MEAC Rookie of the Year, ranked 14th in the MEAC in scoring at 12.4 points per game while hauling down a MEAC-best 9.6 rebounds per outing. She also led all MEAC players and ranked 19th in the nation with 7.4 defensive rebounds per game. The 6-1 forward from Miami Gardens, Fla., was named MEAC Rookie of the Week seven times during the season in addition to MEAC Defensive Player of the Week one time. She was a second-team All-MEAC pick.

Corbo, an Englewood, N.J. native, led NSU and ranked 18th in the nation in scoring, at 20.8 points per game. She also paced the MEAC and finished 13th nationally in free-throw shooting, at 88.4 percent, breaking her own single-season school record. Corbo also averaged 3.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game and finished her career sixth in school history in scoring (tops among Division I-era players).

JMU guard Precious Hall was named VaSID Player of the Year and Dukes coach Kenny Brooks was named Coach of the Year.
