LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Leon Fricker leads all Bethune-Cookman men’s golfers after two rounds at the FAU Slomin Autism Championship at the Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Florida. The three-day, 54-hole event is being hosted by Florida Atlantic on the North Course.
With heavy storms cutting several players first rounds short Friday afternoon/evening, Bethune-Cookman finished up its first round Saturday morning, followed by second round play immediately afterwards. The Wildcats sat in a tie for 17th place following the first 18 holes, only to move up two spots to 15th as the second round concluded.
Fricker, a junior from Ivybridge, England, turned in his second-best score of the 2014-15 season during the first round, carding a 2-under 69. He followed with a 1-over 72 to place himself fifth overall heading into Sunday’s championship round. He currently sits at 141 (-1), trailing third place by just a single stroke.
Ian Clark (76-75=151) sits tied for 62nd in the field after collecting a two-round score of 151 (+9), just two back of a top 50 showing.
Freshman Alvaro Ramirez (77-77=154, +12) fell nine spots from his position after the first 18 holes, as he fired consecutive rounds of 77. He sits tied for 81st.
Bradley Peil, a junior from Ransom, Calif., opened with a 4-over 75, placing himself tied for 53rd. However, he shot an 8-over 79 in the second round, dropping him to a tie for 81st alongside teammate Ramirez.
Meanwhile, England’s Jackson Kneeshaw (83-75=158, +16) bounced back from an opening round 83, firing a 4-over 75 in his second round on Saturday. That allowed Kneeshaw to move up 12 spots to a tie for 95th.
The final B-CU golfer was Scott Lemon (84-74=158, +16) who sits tied alongside Kneeshaw in 95th, making the largest jump of any B-CU golfer on Saturday. He moved up 13 spots following an opening round 84, carding a 3-over 74 in his final 18 holes on Saturday.
As a team, Bethune-Cookman collected scores of 303 and 296, respectively.
UCF (279-293=572, +4) leads the tournament field heading into Sunday, followed by Florida Atlantic, East Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, Connecticut and Northern Illinois all tied for second.
Ryan Stovash of UCF leads the individual field, after turning in scorecards of 68 and 67. He’s followed by FAU’s Derron Peyton in second, only off the lead by one stroke.
The final round of the FAU Slomin Autism Championship begins Sunday at 8 a.m.
