Pirates Hand DSU a Pair of Losses in Saturday’s MEAC Opener

Hampton, Va.
– In what was its first taste of MEAC action for both squads, the Delaware State softball team (6-17, 0-2 MEAC) dropped both games in five innings in Saturday’s doubleheader on the road to the Hampton Pirates (10-16, 2-0 MEAC), falling 9-0 and 11-1.

For DSU, starter Tara Tursellino (4-12) lasted just two innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and two walks, whereas HU’s Allyson Babinsack (6-6) surrendered two hits, no walks and tallied four K’s to pick up the victory.  Offensively, Burrell, Babinsack and shortstop Margaret Wilkins connected for two hits, while Burrell and Wilkins scored twice.

The backend of Saturday’s doubleheader was much the same, beginning with Hampton scoring four runs on five hits in the second to take a 5-0 lead, headlined by a two-run Taylor McCoy RBI-triple McCoy’s RBI at-bat also ended freshman Jessica Shalongo’s (2-5) start in the circle, allowing 10 hits, three walks and tallying three strikeouts.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will look to avoid the series sweep at the hands of the Pirates tomorrow at 1 p.m.
