PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Mike Myers, senior forward on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team, has been named a finalist for the Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award by CollegeInsider.com. The Hawks' star has also been placed on the 2015 Lou Henson All-America Team for his fantastic season this year.
Myers was the catalyst for the incredible turnaround for the UMES men's basketball program this year. The Hawks put together their best season in 41 years, with 18 victories and a postseason berth to the CIT. The success was thanks in large part to the senior forward Myers, who led the team in both scoring (15.8 points per game) and rebounding (7.0 rebounds per game). The Camden, N.J. native was an All-MEAC performer, recognized by the league as well as several publications as one of the conference's top players. The senior finished the season with the third-most free throw attempts in the nation (282) and tenth in the NCAA in field goal percentage (59.3%).
The Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award is presented annually to the top mid-major performer in NCAA Division I men's basketball.
On Thursday, CollegeInsider.com released their finalists for the award, representing the top 31 mid-major players in the nation. The 2015 Lou Henson Award recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on
Friday, April 3 in Indianapolis. Myers is the only player from the MEAC or from an HBCU to be a finalist for the Lou Henson Award this year.
The Lou Henson Award is named in honor of the legenedary coach who retired after a spectacular career that lasted 41 years. When Henson retired in 2005, he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State, and he is one of only 12 coaches to ever take two different schools to the Final Four. Earlier this year, Henson was selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.
