Bethune-Cookman Stops Seattle for 8-3 Victory

LOS ANGELES – Junior shortstop Sophia Ortega was 3-for-4 on Sunday as Bethune-Cookman Softball posted an 8-3 win over Seattle in the Wildcats final game of the LMU/Muscle Milk Softball Invitational at Smith Field. The three-day tournament was hosted by Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles.

Hacienda Heights, California native Sabrina Anguiano earned the win, improving to 4-20 on the year. She tossed a complete game with three runs given up, as she spread out seven hits and struck out three.

The B-CU offense used Sophia Ortega’s 3-for-4 day at the plate, as the Highland, California native drove in a run and scored once. Shelley picked up a multi-hit performance with a pair of singles, leading the squad with three RBI and one run scored. Engram and Gutierrez mirrored each other at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, adding a RBI a piece.

Bethune-Cookman returns to the field Tuesday, March 24, as the Wildcats take on fellow Volusia County opponent Stetson in DeLand, Florida. The doubleheader between the Cats and Hatters is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

Late Theatrics Lead NCCU Softball Past Quinnipiac and Rider

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lady Eagles scored nine runs in the seventh inning to defeat Quinnipiac University, 13-10, and then scored the game-winning run in their last at bat again to knock off Rider University, 5-4, in North Carolina Central University’s final two games at the Liberty Softball Classic on Sunday.

Junior London Booker was the winning pitcher in both contests. Offensively, junior Casey Hargett ripped six hits and drove in six runs; senior Emerie Germ tacked on five hits and scored five times; and sophomore Dominique Wilson reached base a half dozen times with four hits and two walks including a home run.

Ten different Lady Eagles produced hits on the day with junior Markell Wylie and sophomore Brianna Hampton chipping in three apiece. NCCU batted .438 with 28 combined hits in moving back to .500 at 12-12 overall.

NCCU returns home to host Montreat College in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 4 p.m.

Howard Outlasts Lady Hawks In Rubber Match

WASHINGTON – In the rubber match, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team could not keep up with the Howard (HU) Lady Bison as they fell, 8-3, at the Washington Nationals Junior Park. With the loss, UMES dropped to 3-15 (1-2 MEAC) whereas HU moved to 8-18 (2-1 MEAC).

Maryland Eastern Shore registered six hits, led by juniors Vanessa Gomez and Emily Diseroad. Both ladies went 2-of-3 from the plate. Furthermore, Gomez also had a season-high three stolen bases in the loss.

On March 25, Maryland Eastern Shore heads to Baltimore to face the UMBC Retrievers in a nonconference doubleheader. First-pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
