Hornets Defeat Marist, Fall to Cavs to Wrap Up UVA Home Tourney
Charlottesville, Va.– The Delaware State softball team (5-14) settled for a split in the final day of the UVa Home Tournament Saturday afternoon by way of an 8-7 win over the Marist Red Foxes (8-12), in addition to an 8-7 loss to host Virginia (6-24).
Throughout the weekend slate, DSU posted a 3-1 mark, along with extending its winning streak to four, despite seeing it snapped with the loss to UVa.
At game’s end, both teams combined for 25 hits, as Velez led the way for DSU with a 3-for-4 effort. For the Cavaliers, infielder Kaitlin Fitzgerald turned in a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, in addition to scoring three times, while Ingraham went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Pitching wise for the Hornets, Tursellino allowed 10 hits, six earned runs, one walk and tallied three K’s in five innings of work, whereas Shalongo (2-4) picked up the loss relinquishing four hits and two earned runs in just one inning.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. this Tuesday for a doubleheader (12 p.m. | 2 p.m.) against Drexel, in what will be DSU’s final non-conference matchup.

B-CU Softball Stopped by UC Riverside, 7-0
LOS ANGELES – Bethune-Cookman fell to UC Riverside by a score of 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field, as part of the LMU/Muscle Milk Softball Invitational hosted by Loyola Marymount University. With the loss, B-CU drops to 0-4 on its west coast swing in California.
In picking up the victory, Chelsea Ponce surrendered just a single base on balls to second baseman Kaitlin Alamprese. With the win, she improved her record to 18-3 on the year.
The Bethune-Cookman offense was held in check without a hit in the game, but the Maroon and Gold put three players aboard with a pair of Highlanders errors and the walk drawn from Alamprese.
Anguiano was tagged with the loss as she went the distance in the circle, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits. She walked three and struck out one. In the loss, she dropped her record to 3-20 on the campaign.
The Wildcats conclude their stint on the west coast Sunday with a single game against Seattle. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. PST.

Lady Hawks Split MEAC Opener versus Howard
WASHINGTON – After a long spring break southern rodeo, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team prepared for their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) opener against the Howard (HU) Lady Bison. The squad split the doubleheader as they dropped game one, 2-0, but won game two, 6-5.
As a result, the Lady Hawks moved to 3-14 (1-1 MEAC) while Howard went to 7-18 (1-1 MEAC) on the season.
UMES registered only six hits in the second contest, but made each one count. Junior Vanessa Gomez notched her seventh multi-hit performance, going 2-of-4 with a RBI and run scored. Fellow junior Trenece Nash delivered the biggest hit as she belted a shot into the stands. The Georgia-native tallied a game-high three RBIs in the victory.
Tomorrow’s rubber match begins at 12 p.m. at the Washington National’s Youth Junior Park.
