NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina A&T State’s Emily Strombeck was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Player of the Year as announced by the conference on Friday. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Thashaina Seraus was named the Rookie of the Year, while North Carolina A&T State’s head coach James Williams earned Coach of the Year accolades.
All awards are voted on by the conference's head bowling coaches and sports information directors.
Strombeck guided the No. 10 Aggies to a 20-4 mark in conference play and an 62-33 overall record as North Carolina A&T State won the southern division. The junior totaled a 9,551 total pinfall and averaged 207.6 in 46 team games. She bowled a season-high 269 twice, and was selected MEAC Bowler of the Week after her 269 performance at the MEAC Southern Divisional Meet #3. Strombeck earned Kat Klash Tournament MVP honors after averaging a 223.1 pinfall.
Seraus tallied a 211.7 averaged pinfall in 64 games during her rookie campaign. She recorded a 13,551 total pinfall and notched a season-high 267 at the FDU New Jersey Jamboree and Mid-Winter Invitational. Seraus, a three-time MEAC Player of the Week selection, registered nine tournaments with over 1,000 total pinfall, including 2,063 total pins during 10 games at the Mid-Winter Invitational. As a team, the Lady Hawks will look for their third consecutive MEAC Tournament Championship and fourth over the last five years.
In his sixth season at the helm, Williams guided the Lady Aggies to a 62-33 regular season record and 20-4 mark in MEAC play. North Carolina A&T State won the southern division and is currently ranked 10th in the nation by the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA).
Joining Strombeck and Seraus on the All-MEAC First-Team is teammate MacKenzie Robinson of North Carolina A&T State and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Mariana Alvarado and Tatiana Munzo.
The 2015 MEAC Bowling Championship begins Friday, March 20 at the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake, Virginia at 8:30 a.m. Teams will compete in traditional games to determine seeding for day two action.
Play continues on Saturday with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series. The championship concludes on Sunday, March 22 with the championship final at noon.
The championship finale will air tape-delayed on ESPNU on March 30 at 9:00 p.m.
