GRU Augusta third at Southern Intercollege Championship

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguar men's golf team played a one-day event of 36 holes at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship at Athens Country Club and finished third out of 14 teams on Monday, with junior Maverick Antcliff leading the Jags in a tie for fourth overall.

Hosted by the University of Georgia, the tournament began in 1935 and ran annually through 1942. It resumed in 1946 and was held through 1965 and then launched in 1975 - repackaged eventually as the SIC. The Jaguar starting lineup was Maverick Antcliff, Viktor Edin, Broc Everett, Jake Marriott, and Robin Petersson, while Jack Heasman, Cody Shafer, Jackson Stroup, and John Yi competing as individuals.

After the first nine holes, the Jags were four-under par and overtook UGA for the top spot by one stroke. The Bulldogs outlasted the Jags down the stretch and ran away with their home event in the second round to finish one-under par. UGA won the event by 13 strokes ahead of Georgia State (+12) in second and the Jags in third (+16).

Senior Jack Heasman competed as an individual and fired three birdies on the front and back nine to finish round one with a 69. Antcliff carded the same score on the par par-72, 6,917-yard course in the first round. Antcliff had four birdies in the first 18 holes and an eagle on the par-five sixth hole measuring 444 yards. Heasman and Antcliff shared first place at the conclusion of round one and Antcliff held on for a tie for fourth at one-under par – shooting a 72 (+2) in round two. Heasman ended the event at nine over to take a tie for 38th.

Jags sophomore Jake Marriott shaved two strokes in his second round and shot a 72 to end two-over par in 12th after 36 holes. GRU’s Robin Petersson shot a minus two 70 in round one, but carded an 80 (+8) in his second 18 to finish tied for 28th.

Viktor Edin ended 12-over par and tied for 50th, firing 76 and 80 in his rounds to round out the lineup of five. For the GRU individuals, Cody Shafer was the fourth best out of all 15 individuals. Shafer five over par after two birdies in his second round and John Yi tied for 45th and Jackson Stroup 65th.

LSU has won nine SIC titles, followed by Georgia with eight and North Texas with seven. Houston holds three, while North Carolina, Duke and Wake Forest have two apiece. Miami, Florida, Indiana, Oral Roberts, Texas A&M and Georgia Tech all have one win. Individual medalists include Wake Forest’s Arnold Palmer in 1950, Oklahoma State’s Bob Tway in 1979 and Centenary’s Hal Sutton in 1980. Georgia’s winners include Lester Kelly in 1955, Bob Moser in 1959, Cobby Ware in 1960, Vinny Giles in 1966, and Chip Beck in 1976, 1977 and 1978.

NCCU climb leaderboard at Cape Fear Intercollegiate

LELAND, N.C. – A final round 306 (+18) rallied the North Carolina Central University golf team to an eighth-place finish in the Cape Fear Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University at Cape Fear National on Sunday and Monday.

The Eagles score in Monday’s final round was the squad’s second lowest 18-hole team score in five tournaments in 2014-15. NCCU was in 10th place out of 12 teams after producing scores of 323 and 313 on Sunday but the Eagles passed IUPUI and Eastern Illinois with four counting scores in the 70s on Monday.

The freshman duo of Zane Lewis and Jordan Bohannon led NCCU with a pair of top-30 performances in the 71 player field.

Lewis shot three consistent rounds of 75, 76 and 76 on the 6,950-yard, par-72 layout to tie for 19th with a 54-hole total of 211 (+11). The Sanford, N.C., product has led the Eagles in all three of his collegiate starts.

Bohannon moved up to 27th overall after firing NCCU’s best round of the tourney on Monday. The Southfield, Mich., native signed scorecards of 78, 79 and 73 to finish three strokes behind Lewis at 230 (+14). His final round 73 matched his best collegiate round.

Sumner Tate (82-80-79—241) and Michael Wilson (88-78-78—244) turned in the Eagles other counting scores in all three rounds. Garreth Carpenter (92-90-84—266) also represented NCCU.

Gardner-Webb University won in the team title while High Point University’s Jack Sides captured medalist honors with a two-under par total of 214 (69, 72, 73).

NCCU will return to the links in the Blue Devil Spring Shootout at Duke Country Club on Sunday, March 22.

Blanco paces Hawks to 14th-place finish

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men’s Golf Team had a tough day on the green as the squad finished 14th overall at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship, host by the Georgia Bulldogs. The 36-hole event took place at the historic Athens Country Club, the same place where legendary golfer Arnold Palmer won back in 1950 as a member of Wake Forest.

As a team, the Hawks shot a 707 in two rounds. Norman Blanco (New Orleans, La.) led the way by posting a career best. The New Orleans-native recorded a 72 (E) and trailed only three strokes of the lead after one round. In the second round, Blanco continued to pace UMES and finished t-57 overall.

After shooting an 89 in the first round, Timothy Mitchell (Glenn Dale, Md.) improved four shots in the second. Bryce Young (Stevensville, Md.) also stepped up as he registered an 87 in the second round, six strokes better than the first round.

Other notable performances included the host team, Georgia, winning the event by 13 shots over in-state rival, Georgia State. Furthermore, the Panthers’ J.J. Grey took home the individual title as he held off Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston by a single stroke.

On March 28-29, the Hawks travels to Grasonville, Md. to compete in the Towson Whiting-Turner Invitational.
