NCCU Lady Eagles Outscore B-CU in Second Half, But Fall 50-33

DURHAM N.C. – North Carolina Central University women’s basketball team outscored the Bethune-Cookman University Lady Wildcats in the second half, but it was not enough to come away with a victory, falling 50-33 on Saturday, Feb. 28 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.

Junior Tisha Dixon led the Lady Eagles with eight points, while senior Racquel Davis and senior Nikki Works took control of the glass with seven rebounds each. Works also had five points as the team’s second-leading scorer.

Kendra Cooper finished with a game-high 15 points for Bethune-Cookman (12-14, 9-5 MEAC).

The Lady Eagles will play at Savannah State on Monday, Mar. 2 at 5:30 p.m.

UMES Upends Lady Hornets in Saturday Bout, 68-61

Dover, Del. -
Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State women's basketball team (5-22, 2-12 MEAC)  dropped its sixth in a row with a 68-61 loss to the visiting UMES Hawks (11-15, 8-7 MEAC), despite a career-high 27 points (13-of-18) from forward Amber Bogard.

With this loss, the Lady Hornets dropped to 0-2 against the Hawks this season, whereas UMES snapped its brief two-game skid.

At game's end, three Hawks scored in double figures, led by guard Jessica Long's 18 points (5-of-15), whereas McCoy finished with 16 (6-of-10) off the bench.  For DSU, guard Mikah Aldridge finished with 15 points (6-of-12) as the only other player to reach double figures in the scoring column, whereas leading scorer (16.7 ppg) and top rebounder (8.0 rpg) Tierra Hawkins battled foul trouble throughout Saturday's contest to finish with just eight points (3-of-5) and five boards before fouling out.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will take on Hampton this Monday evening (5:30 p.m.), in what will be their final home game of the season.

Tate-DeFreitas, Lupoe Lead Lady Pirates To Blowout  

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas and freshman forward Kaylah Lupoe each had career performances on Saturday evening in Burr Gymnasium, leading the Hampton University women’s basketball team to a 106-57 win over rival Howard.


The Lady Pirates (16-11, 12-2 MEAC) won their sixth straight game overall and their 15th in a row over Howard. It also marked the first time since Feb. 12, 2001 (a 104-71 win over Coppin State) that the Lady Pirates scored 100 points in a game.

Tate-DeFreitas registered her third 30-point game of the season, dropping a career-high 39 points on 16-for-24 shooting. Lupoe added a career-high 20 points while also grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds.

The Lady Pirates will be in Dover, Del. on Monday to take on Delaware State at 5:30 p.m.
