Hornets Walloped by Oakland in Five Innings to Conclude ECU’s Pirate Classic

Greenville, N.C. – The Delaware State softball team (0-5) wrapped up its opening weekend Sunday afternoon with a 12-0 five-inning loss to the Oakland Grizzlies (2-2) to conclude Eastern Carolina’s Pirate Classic.

Picking up the shutout victory was Erin Kownacki allowing five hits, two walks and fanning five, whereas DSU’s Jessica Shalongo (0-1) surrendered six hits, five earned runs and four walks in three innings of work.  Offensively, the Hornets were led by freshman Vanessa Washington going 2-for-3, while OU’s Jackie Kisman went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.

Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will head to Durham, N.C. this weekend to take part in the Eagle Challenge, hosted by MEAC foe North Carolina Central.  Along with NCCU, Delaware State will face Canisius, Omaha and Virginia.

Red Storm Comeback To Knock Off Lady Hawks 

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In the final day of the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team lost to the St. John’s Red Storm, 7-2. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-3 overall while St. John’s moved to 3-1 on the season.

For St. John’s, Lauren Zick went 3-of-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Brittany Garcia and Savannah Warren each produced two hits in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore will take nearly two weeks off until their next game. On Feb. 20-21, UMES goes to Spartanburg, S.C. where they will compete in the Spartan Invitational, hosted by USC-Upstate.
