Softball Drops Slugfest To Penguins 

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In their season opener, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team dropped a slugfest to the Youngstown State Penguins, 10-7, at the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational. With the setback, the Lady Hawks fell to 0-1 overall while Youngstown State moved to 1-0 on the young season.

 

Due to the frost delay, the Lady Hawks have rescheduled their contest against Campbell for Sunday, Feb. 8, at 1p.m. Before then, Maryland Eastern Shore return to the diamond tomorrow as they face Presbyterian at 5 p.m., followed by St. John’s approximately 7 p.m.

Coppin State Drops to Murray State

ATHENS, Ga. – The Coppin State softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to Murray State on the opening day of the University of Georgia Red-and-Black Showcase Tournament at Jack Turner Field Friday morning.

Coppin State returns to action Saturday when it faces Winthrop at 10:30 a.m. and Georgia at 4:30 p.m. The Georgia game will be televised on ESPN3.com.

Hornets Shutout by Longwood, ECU to Open Pirate Classic

Greenville, N.C. – The Delaware State softball team (0-2) kicked off its 2015 campaign with a pair shutout losses Friday in the first day of the Pirate Classic, beginning with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the Longwood Lancers (1-0) in six innings, followed by a 10-0 five-inning loss to host East Carolina (2-0).

At game’s end, the Hornets managed just four hits, led by infielder Rochelle Sablay going 2-for-4.  Picking up the victory was pitcher Libby Morris (1-0), allowing one walk and tallying five K’s, while Tursellino allowed nine hits, seven earned runs and three walks.

Game two against East Carolina, on the other hand, was much of the same for Delaware State, this time with the Pirates jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first by way of an Ali Rameriz base clearing RBI-triple, followed by ECU’s Nicole Cheek (1) connecting for a three-run homer off Tursellino (0-2) in the ensuing inning  After tacking on a run in the fifth, Cheek ended the game with a base clearing three-run RBI-double.

Tomorrow, the Columbia Blue & Red will look to bounce back in day two of ECU’s Pirate Classic against Oakland (9 a.m.) and South Carolina (2 p.m.).

B-CU Drops Season-Opener to UNCG, 14-11

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Kaitlin Alamprese and Nereyda Gutierrez each went 3-for-5 at the plate on Friday, but Bethune-Cookman was unable to pull out an opening day win, falling to UNC Greensboro, 14-11 at Patriots Point. The game was part of the Charleston Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

Despite falling behind 2-0 in the opening frame, Bethune-Cookman (0-1) plated five runs in the top-half of the second to claim its first lead of the game.

Alyssa Zinkiewicz went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and a run batted in to help lead UMass Lowell to a 6-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the nightcap game of the Charleston Challenge held at Patriots Point. The game was part of opening-day action for the Wildcats in the annual tournament hosted by the College of Charleston in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

 B-CU used the bat of Ortega to lead the team offensively, as the Highland, California native tallied three hits in three trips, scoring a pair of runs and logging an assisted putout on defense. Gutierrez added two hits to round-out the Wildcats recording multi-hit performances.

The Wildcats continue action at the Charleston Challenge on Saturday, taking on Marshall in the day’s opening game at 9 a.m.
