Mina Matsuba continued her winning streak in dual match singles play as Bethune-Cookman won its spring season opener with a 5-2 victory over Florida Atlantic Friday at City Island Tennis Center.
The 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference player of the year overcame a first-set injury and downed FAU’s Catalina Ene 7-5, 6-1 for her 18th consecutive victory. Matsuba, a sophomore, set a school record with 24 wins last spring.
Matsuba and newcomer Alejandra Vidal both won their singles and doubles matches to help the Lady Wildcats took an impressive opening day victory for Tim Pleasant’s fourth season as head coach.
Seniors Chinatsu Kajiwara and Gaby Chinchilla posted singles victories for the Lady Wildcats. For Chinchilla, the win was her 100th combined victory in singles and doubles play in dual matches.
