Pirates Fall To NJIT On The Road

NEWARK, N.J. – The Hampton University men’s basketball team dropped its non-conference finale on Monday, falling 86-67 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Fleischer Athletic Center.

Junior guard Reginald Johnson dropped a career-high 27 points to lead four Pirates in double figures, going 10-for-17 from the floor and hitting five 3-pointers. Guard Quinton Chievous, junior guard Deron Powers, and junior forward Jervon Pressley each added 11 points.

The Pirates will return home to take on Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Coppin Defeats Morgan  

BALTIMORE – The Coppin State men’s basketball started a critical four-game homestand by pulling away late for an 80-67 triumph over cross-town rival Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest with ESPN cameras rolling.

 The Eagles (4-18 overall, 3-5 MEAC) treated the national television audience to a five-star performance by placing four players in double figures for the fourth straight contest. Coppin State never trailed as it ended a six-game losing streak to Morgan State (4-18, 2-6).

 Leading Coppin State’s offensive barrage was senior Arnold Fripp, who detonated for 22 points and nine rebounds in 35 minutes.

 The Eagles continue their longest homestand of the season Saturday afternoon when it hosts South Carolina State at 4:00 p.m.

NCCU Cruises to 85-43 Victory Over Florida A&M For 32nd Straight Home Win

DURHAM, N.C. – All five North Carolina Central University starters scored in double figures as the Eagles cruised to an 85-43 conference victory over Florida A&M University on Monday night, their 32nd consecutive win inside McDougald-McLendon Gym.

NCCU (17-6, 9-0 MEAC) blistered the nets, shooting 54.4 percent from the field (31-for-57), including 58.8 percent from three-point range (10-for-17), and 86.7 percent from the charity stripe (13-for-15).

Up next, NCCU travels to Greensboro to face the rival Aggies of North Carolina A&T on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m.

Carlton, Daniel and Miller Lead Bison To Win Over UMES

Washington, DC—James Carlton poured in a game-high 31 points and James Daniel, and James Miller each added 21 and 19, respectively to help Howard University pull out an 83-74 win over Maryland Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at Burr Gymnasium.

For the game, Howard shot 57 percent (27 of 47), including a sizzling 69 percent (16 of 23) in the second half.  Carlton, who was named MEAC Player of the Week, was 11 of 20 from the field and also grabbed 11 rebounds for his sixth double double of the year.

NEXT UP:  UMES hosts Hampton on February 7 while the Bison travel to Norfolk State on Saturday for a 6 pm contest against the Spartans.
