Boyd Receives Norfolk Sports Club?s Joseph Echols Memorial Award

NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State softball standout Morgan Boyd was honored by the Norfolk Sports Club on Monday with the organization’s Joseph Echols Memorial Award. The honor is bestowed upon the top senior student-athlete at Norfolk State, male or female.

Boyd was honored for the 2013-14 athletics season. She wrapped up her four-year career with the Spartan softball program in the spring of 2014. A native of Chesapeake, Va., Boyd was named first-team All-MEAC and first-team all-state during her senior season. She also was honored with the athletic department’s NSU Female Athlete of the Year Award at the end-of-year athletics banquet.

She hit .440 during her senior campaign, ranking second in the league and 17th in the nation in hitting. Boyd also stood 23rd in the nation in stolen bases per game, finishing the year 27-of-31 in stolen base attempts. She ended her career first all-time at NSU with 205 hits as well as in the top 5 in games played, games started, at bats and stolen bases and in the top 10 in total bases and runs.

Boyd was given the award on Monday afternoon during the Norfolk Sports Club’s luncheon at Dave & Buster’s in Virginia Beach. New NSU football coach Latrell Scott also spoke to the organization and answered questions during Monday’s gathering.
