DSU Falls to Omaha, NCCU to Wrap Up Eagle Challenge
Apex, N.C. - The Delaware State softball team (1-8) concluded this weekend's Eagle Challenge falling 5-1 to the Omaha Mavericks (4-4), along with a dramatic 12-11 loss to host and MEAC foe North Carolina Central (2-2).
In DSU's loss to Omaha, the Hornets scored its lone run by way of infielder Rochelle Sablay singling through the left side to bring in freshman Vanessa Washington. Pitching wise, sophomore Tara Tursellino (1-6) allowed four hits, four walks and fanned four in the losing effort, whereas Kat Barrow (3-2) surrendered four hits, two walks and recorded six strikeouts to pick up the win.
The contest against NCCU, Vanessa Washington and Jordan Stamps both went 2-for-4, while Washington scored twice and drove in two runs. For NCCU, Kayle Brueck went 2-for-3 with three runs and five RBI, whereas infielder Jenny Tracey went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. In the circle, Jessica Shalongo's rough outing included allowing 11 hits, 12 earned runs and six walks, compared to Londo Booker (1-1) securing the win in a relief effort relinquishing three hits, three earned runs, one walk and tallying three K's.
Coming up, the Hornets will return to action this Friday (4:30 p.m.) against Wagner in Norfolk State's Spartan Classic. DSU will also face Yale and Drexel, followed by another matchup with Wagner throughout the cluster.

Wildcats Fall Short at Jacksonville, 3-2
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Ashley Simon’s RBI single in the fifth inning proved to be the game-winning run on Sunday, as Jacksonville defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-2 in the finale of the Jacksonville University Invitational at the Pruitt Complex.
B-CU was led offensively by Calesha Shelley with three hits in four at-bats, while Geena Capitini registered both RBI via the home run. For the weekend, Shelley tied Mariah Davis for a team-leading six hits, including the first triple of the campaign for the Wildcats.
Sabrina Anguiano took the loss for the Cats, falling to 1-7 on the year. The sophomore from Hacienda Heights, California tossed all seven innings in the circle, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out three. Meanwhile, the win went to JU’s Victoria Brown in relief action, as she tossed four frames, allowing just a single hit and fanning two. She upped her record to 3-4, while Taylor Rossman earned the no-decision in three innings pitched, giving up two earned runs on three hits with two walks.
Bethune-Cookman gets back on the field next weekend, traveling to Ft. Myers, Florida for the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. The tournament runs February 20-22, with B-CU starting off Friday against Stony Brook.
