Rattlers Get First Win Of Season 57-50 Over NCA&T Aggies

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M Rattlers (1-23, 1-10 MEAC) got their first win of the season in a 57-50 win over the Aggies of North Carolina A&T (6-20, 3-8 MEAC).  Jermaine Ruttley and Jorge Rosa combined for 46 points to lead all scorers in the game. 

Ruttley, shot .500 from the field, going nine-of-18 from the field, including four-of-seven from the three-point arc.  Rosa, went six-of-14 from the field, three-of-nine from three-point range.  Rosa also went seven-of-eight from the free throw line.  Ruttley also led the Rattlers with nine rebounds.

What’s next for the Rattlers: FAMU will take on the defending MEAC champion North Carolina Central University Eagles, Monday at 8 p.m.in the Lawson Center.

Morgan State’s Hot 2nd Half Leads to 73-70 Win over NSU

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State’s Cliff Cornish sank a pair of free throws with 32.2 seconds left, and the Norfolk State men’s basketball team came up empty on its possession. The result was a 73-70 loss to the Bears on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

For the second game in a row, the Spartans lost a halftime lead, and again the opposition went on a big run after intermission to pull ahead. NSU, though, was able to weather the storm, as the Bears never led by more than five after the Spartans were up by as much as 15.

The Spartans hit 18-of-50 for the game (36.0 percent), the second straight contest being held under 40 percent.

Bison Win Easily Over Coppin State on The Road

Baltimore, MD—James “JC” Carlton scored a game-high 27 points and James “J-Byrd” Daniel, III added 18 to lead Howard (13-12, 7-4 MEAC) to an easy 77-60 win over Coppin State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s game at the Physical Education Activity Center.  The win gives the Bison a sweep of the Eagles.

Carlton recorded his seventh double double (27 points, 13 rebounds) of the season while Daniel is getting ever so close to the 1,000-point plateau.  The sophomore guard from Hampton, VA needs 10 points.  It would make him the first player in school history to reach that mark in his second season.

NEXT UP: Howard will attempt to win its second straight when it travels to Princess Anne, MD to take on the Hawks of Maryland Eastern Shore at 7:30 pm

NCCU Overcomes Second-Half Deficit to Earn Road Win At Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 12-point halftime lead turned into a second-half deficit, but North Carolina Central University withstood the surge by Bethune-Cookman and the Eagles pulled away for a 65-51 road victory inside Moore Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Parks scored a team-best 16 points, including nine in the second half, to top four double-digit scorers for NCCU.

NCCU hits the court again on Monday, Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Florida.

Time Runs Out On Second Half Comeback, 91-85

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fought tooth and nail in the second half, but Delaware State spoiled Homecoming by handing the Hawks a 91-85 defeat on Saturday evening. UMES (14-13, 7-5) trailed by as many as 19 points and closed to gap to a bucket, but the Hawks could not quite get over the hump against the rival Hornets.

Mike Myers nearly posted yet another double-double, finishing a rebound shy with 23 points and nine boards. Myers was a remarkable 9-for-11 from the field, but just 5-of-9 from the free throw line. Andino set a career-high with 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from long range.

UMES faces another tough test with the third-place team, the Howard University Bison, coming to Princess Anne on Monday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at William P. Hytche Athletic Center, following the conclusion of the women's basketball game.
