B-CU Sweeps Day One in Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Bethune-Cookman University softball team bounced back from a 0-5 opening weekend, collecting a pair of wins during day-one of the Jacksonville University Invitational. The Wildcats defeated Akron 8-5 during game one, followed by a 6-3 victory over the host Fins during a nightcap, Friday, Feb. 13 at Pruitt Complex.
In game one, senior designated hitter Shamaria Engram (Dover, Fla.) led the Cats at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with one RBI and one stolen base, while Ortega’s three-run homer led B-CU with three RBI’s.
In game two, Five Cats finished with a multi-hit game against JU as B-CU racked up 13 as a team. Ortega led the offensive charge with three hits during her first trips to the plate.
The Wildcats return to action during day two of the Jacksonville Invitational, Saturday, Feb. 14, opening with Syracuse at noon, followed by a rematch with the Zips at 4 p.m.

Hornets Settle for a Split to Open Eagle Challenge
Durham, N.C. - The Delaware State softball team (1-6) began the first day of the Eagle Challenge with its first win of 2015 by way of a 16-8 five-inning victory over host North Carolina Central (0-1), but came up short to the ACC's Virginia Cavaliers (3-4) in five innings, 14-1.
The Cavaliers finished the game with 11 hits, spearheaded by Kaitlin Fitzgerald's 3-for-3, two-run and three-RBI effort, while Formby surrendered six hits, two walks and recorded three K's. Tursellino, on the other hand, allowed seven hits, 12 earned runs and eight walks before being replaced by freshman Jessica Shalongo in the third. Offensively for DSU, Gazzola went 3-for-3 and a run scored, while Washington 2-for-3.
Coming up, the Columbia Blue & Red will wrap up the Eagle Challenge tomorrow against Omaha (1 p.m.) and North Carolina Central (3:15 p.m.).

Coppin Drops Two
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Coppin State softball team dropped a pair of games during the opening day of the North Carolina A&T Tournament Friday at the Lady Aggie Softball Complex.
The Eagles lost to St. Francis, 17-1, and North Carolina A&T, 7-4.
In the opening game against St. Francis, the hitting highlights included a double from Alana Williams and a RBI triple from Kim Brown.
Coppin State will play North Carolina A&T at 10:30 a.m. and Saint Francis at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the weekend tournament.
