BALTIMORE -- Coppin State University will salute and recognize the 1996-97 men’s basketball team between games of the Coppin State-Howard basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 14.
The 1997 team will be presented with its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship rings during a special ceremony at mid-court of the Physical Education Complex Arena.
The 1996-97 Coppin State men’s basketball team finished the season with 22 victories. The Eagles won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championship in overtime against North Carolina A&T. Coppin State stunned the college basketball world when it became the first MEAC school and only the third 15th-seed to win a NCAA Tournament game at the time of its victory.
The Eagles defeated South Carolina 78-65 in the first round before falling to Texas, 82-81, in the second round. Danny Singletary scored a team-high 22 points in the win over second-seeded South Carolina at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh.
Other highlights of the season included the Eagles winning their fifth straight regular season MEAC title and posting their fourth 20-win season in five years. Antoine Brockington and Terquin Mott were named to the All-MEAC first team while Reggie Welch was a second-team selection. Freshman Troy Lewis was a second-team MEAC All-Rookie Team.
Brockington, Mott and Welch were named to the MEAC All-Tournament team and Mott was selected as the Most Outstanding Player.
Coppin State played a school-record six overtime games during the season, winning four of them. In addition, Coppin State trailed UMES by 19 points in the opening round of the MEAC tournament before rallying to win 90-88 in overtime. Without that win over the Hawks, CSU would not have been in a position to make history in the NCAA tournament.
