MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY MEN?S AND WOMEN?S TENNIS HONORS

NORFOLK, Va. – Bethune-Cookman sophomore’s Alvarro Barrera and Mina Matsuba were chosen as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s and Women’s Tennis Athletes of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. Bethune-Cookman’s Alexander Chepik and Maria Garoz-Mareno were selected as the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Rookies of the Week.

Barrera (So., Madrid, Spain) completed a perfect week against Warner and Stetson. He went 2-0 in singles play, posting a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 win against Warner, while securing a victory over Stetson, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Matsuba (So., Mie, Japan) went 3-1 at the No. 1 singles position and the No. 1 doubles spot against Florida Atlantic and Lynn. She secured a singles win against Florida Atlantic, 7-5, 6-1. In doubles action, Matsuba went undefeated, with a 6-0 victory over Florida Atlantic and a 6-2 win against Lynn.

Chepik (Fr., Moscow, Russia) finished with a 1-1 record in singles and doubles against Warner and Stetson. He secured a straight-set win in singles over Stetson (6-4, 7-6) while picking up a victory over Warner (8-4) in doubles. 

Garoz-Mareno (Fr., Cadiz, Spain) recorded a 2-2 record against Florida Atlantic and Lynn. She registered a singles victory, 7-5, 6-1, while playing at the No. 1 position, against Florida Atlantic. Garoz-Mareno, while playing at No. 2 doubles, secured a 6-3 win against Florida Atlantic.

 

Other Top Performers:

Antonio Pejic (NSU) posted a 2-6, 7-6, 10-6 win at the No. 3 singles position against North Carolina-Greensboro’s Cameron Smith.

Cierra Plummer (MSU) registered a victory at the No. 3 singles spot against Navy, 6-4, 6-7 (10-8), 12-10.

Danielle Thompson (MSU) earned a victory at the No. 1 singles position in three sets over Navy, 3-6, 6-4, and 10-7.
