Hawks Fly By Norfolk State Spartans, 82-64
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s basketball team made an emphatic statement with an 82-64 road victory at Norfolk State on Monday night. UMES (14-12, 7-4) turned in a complete performance to knock off the second-place Spartans, improving the Hawks’ position to third in the MEAC.
The win over the Spartans breaks a seven-game losing streak against Norfolk State over the previous three seasons. Before Monday, Norfolk State had won 23 of the previous 25 meetings between the two schools. It was the first Hawks’ win at Echols Hall since a 95-88 overtime victory back on January 7, 2001.
UMES returns to Princess Anne for homecoming weekend, hosting their rivals Delaware State on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at W.P. Darden’s Trey Lifts Pirates Past Bison in OT
HAMPTON, Va. – Thanks in large part to a clutch 3-pointer from junior guard Brian Darden, the Hampton University men’s basketball team outlasted Howard 73-69 in overtime Monday evening at the HU Convocation Center.
The Pirates improved to 10-14 overall and 6-5 in the MEAC with their 10th straight win over Howard.
Darden and junior guard Deron Powers. Each had 18 points to lead the Pirates, going a combined 8-for-15 from behind the arc, with each player hitting four shots from distance. Junior guard Reginald Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) added 15 points.
The Pirates will be in Baltimore, Md. on Monday, Feb. 16 to take on Morgan State at 7:30 p.m.

Hornets Get Back On Track With Win Over Rattlers
Dover, Del. --- Tyshawn Bell recorded his third career double-double, including a personal -best 23 points; and Amere May tallied 24 points to lead Delaware State to a 90-74 win over Florida A&M in a MEAC men’s basketball contest in Memorial Hall this evening.
The Hornets snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 11-13 overall and 5-4 in the MEAC. The Rattlers fell to 0-23 and 0-10 to remain the only NCAA Division I team without a win this season.
Bell’s 12 rebounds also marked a career-high, while his five three-point field goals tied his personal- best. His previous career scoring high was 21 points on two occasions. His top rebounding total was 11 entering the contest.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday at Maryland-Eastern Shore. Game time is 4 p.m. in Princess Anne, Md.

Coppin Falls To Savannah State
BALTIMORE – Sterling Smith scored a career-high 27 points but it wasn’t enough as Coppin State dropped a 73-70 decision to Savannah State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) men’s basketball game Monday night at the Physical Education Complex.
Smith was a man on fire as he made 8-of-10 shots from the field, including 6-of-7 from 3-point distance. For Smith, whose previous career-high was 24 points, it was the eighth time in his career he has finished with at least 20 points. Smith also complemented his performance with five rebounds and four assists.
Coppin State concludes its four-game homestand Saturday afternoon against Howard beginning at 4:00 p.m.
