Hornets fall on the road to Monarchs

NORFOLK, Va. --- Delaware State became the latest victim of Old Dominion’s home court dominance. The Monarch’s won their 28th straight game at the Ted Constant Center, posting a wire-to-wire 82-39 victory over the Hornets Friday evening.

ODU snapped a four-game losing streak to even its record at 4-4, while dropping DSU to 0-8.

The Monarchs’ home win streak is the fifth-best active mark among all NCAA Division I teams. ODU has not lost at home since Feb. 22, 2014 against Louisiana Tech.

Aaron Bacote led four Old Dominion players in double figures with 18 points. Bacote was six-for-10 from the field, including three-of-six on three point shots. Jordan Baker added 13 points, while Zoran Talley and Denzell Taylor contributed 12 points each for the Monarchs. Taylor, who was six-for-six from the field, also led all players with a career-high 18 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.

Mahir Johnson was the only Delaware State player to reach double figures in scoring, coming off the bench to tally 10 points. Todd Hughes added seven points for the Hornets, all in the second half.

Delaware State’s point total was its lowest since a 58-37 loss to Clemson on Nov. 13, 2013.

Old Dominion led 5-4 before scoring 14 unanswered points to take control of the game. Jordan Baker capped off the rally with a three-pointer to give the Monarchs a 19-4 lead with 11:06 left in the first half.

Johnson had two baskets and Devin Morgan hit a three-pointer to pull the Hornets to within 27-11. ODU responded with an 11-0 run, and opened up a 38-11 lead at the 3:07 mark of the half.

The Monarchs led 44-15 at the break.

Old Dominion scored the first 10 points of the second half to open up a 54-15 lead.

The Hornets showed a little spark, scoring the next 11 points to cut the deficit to 28. Johnson started the rally with a lay-up and Hughes added two baskets and a three-pointer. DeVaughn Mallory capped off the run with a follow-up bucket to pull the Hornets to within 54-26 with 12:43 left to play.

Old Dominion answered by scoring 20 of the next 23 points over the next seven-and-a-half minutes. Ahmad Caver closed out the rally with two free throws to give the Monarchs a 74-49 lead with 5:11 remaining in the game.

Delaware State was 15-for-59 from the field for a season-low 25.4% shooting clip. The Hornets were just three-for-17 from three-point territory (17.6-percent) and five-of-12 at the free throw line (41.7-perfect). Old Dominion shot 50-percent for the game, connecting on 30 of its 60 attempts from the field.

The Monarchs won the rebound battle 50-30. The Hornets have been outrebounded in each game this season.

The Hornets will be off for the next week before returning to action at Michigan on Dec. 12. Game time is 12 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich.
