NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State tennis teams revealed their 2016 spring schedules on Friday, with NSU hosting a total of 16 matches this year.
Each tennis team will play at home eight times this season, while this year’s MEAC Championship will take place in Norfolk at ODU’s Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The Spartans also transition to the MEAC Northern Division in 2016 for its official regular season conference matchups. The two NSU programs will combine to play eight of their 11 MEAC matchups at home.
The season begins at the VCU 4-1 Invitational from Jan. 22-24 for both teams, although the times for each match and the opponents for the women have yet to bet determined. The men will also play at Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington on Jan. 29 and Feb. 5, respectively.
The Spartan women host East Carolina on Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. at ODU, followed by road matches at Mary Washington (Feb. 13) and George Washington (Feb. 14). The men also play on the road on the 13th at Liberty and then host their first match on Feb. 20 against James Madison at 2 p.m. at ODU.
The following day on the 21st, the Spartan women face Christopher Newport at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport News. Both teams will then play host on Feb. 27 at ODU, with the women competing against James Madison at 3 p.m. and the men taking on Bucknell at a yet-to-be-determined time.
The Spartan men also play at Wake Forest on Feb. 28, and then both teams head south for three contests during spring break. They will play South Dakota State on March 9 and Creighton on March 11 in Lake Mary, Fla., and then head up the road to play at Bethune-Cookman on March 13.
The men’s team will return home to play two matches in one day, facing Fairmont State at 9:30 a.m. on March 17 at the NSU Tennis Complex. Both Spartan squads will then open up conference play later that day against UMES at 2 p.m.
After a men’s match at William & Mary on March 18, the Spartans will host several more times before the end of the month at the NSU Tennis Complex. The women compete against Delaware State on March 19 at 1 p.m. in a conference matchup, followed by the men taking on Richmond on the 20th at 1 p.m. Both teams will also face MEAC foe Coppin State on March 25 at 3 p.m. The men play a conference match against Hampton on March 29 at 3 p.m. as well.
The women, meanwhile, finish out the month at Richmond on March 26 and at Hampton on March 30. Both NSU squads play at MEAC rival Howard on April 1 and at Navy either on April 2 (men) or April 3 (women). The men close out the road schedule on April 9 at Longwood.
The last four matches of the regular season take place at home, first on April 10 at 1 p.m. when the women face Longwood. Both teams play their last conference match on April 16 against Morgan State at 3 p.m., and the women also welcome North Carolina Central to town on April 17 at 11 a.m.
This year’s MEAC Championships take place April 21-23 at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
