Lady Eagles Shows Improvement in Road Loss at Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior guard Morgan Jones led North Carolina Central University with 13 points and senior forward Tisha Dixon tallied her first double-double of the season in a 67-52 non-conference road loss to the Charlotte 49ers on Wednesday night in Halton Arena.
The Lady Eagles scored a season-high 52 points and held the 49ers to their lowest point total but NCCU (0-5 Overall) still suffered its fifth straight setback to start the year. Charlotte (5-2) – a Conference USA member – has won three straight contests.
Jones was a perfect 4 for 4 from the free throw line and scored nine points before halftime on her way to a season-high 13 points. Jones also had two of NCCU’s six steals.
Dixon scored in double figures for a fourth time in five games and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to complete her double-double. Dixon’s first double-double of her senior season was her eighth double-double of her career for the Maroon and Gray.
All 10 Lady Eagles that played scored with junior transfer Chantal Thomas swishing nine points in her first start at NCCU. Freshman Dominique Adams and junior Tyshay Britten led the Lady Eagles’ reserves with four points apiece.
The 49ers had four players in double digits with junior Kenya Olley tallying team-high marks of 12 points and four blocks. Alexander and freshman Grace Hunter added 11 points apiece and sophomore Amaya Ransom chipped in 10 points.
NCCU will begin league play on Saturday when the Lady Eagles host Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe University of Maryland Eastern Shore in McDougald-McLendon Arena at 2 p.m.

Mount Saint Mary’s Outlasts Maryland Eastern Shore
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In their first test after the Thanksgiving holidays, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball team fell to the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, 57-50, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. As a result, both squads have duplicate overall records (2-4).
Offensively, the Lady Hawks were unable to find a rhythm as they shot as season-low 29-percent (18-of-63) while committing 17 turnovers. Despite the mistakes, Maryland Eastern Shore outrebounded the Mount, 47-38, and blocked six shots defensively.
Senior guard TeAmber Burke was the lone Hawk in double-figures, posting a team-high 14 points on 50-percent shooting (2-of-4) from downtown. Sophomore guard Moengaroa Subritzky chipped in seven points, four boards, and two dimes in a losing effort.
Other notable Hawk performances included forward Alexis Udoji tallying 11 boards, five points, and three blocks. In her efforts, she moved into eighth on the school’s all-time rebounding list, surpassing Peggy Edwards and former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Defensive Player of the Year Kristi Veltkamp.
Taryana Kelly also reached a milestone as she is now 10th on the all-time blocks list. On the night, the New Jersey native finished with 10 rebounds, seven points, and three rejections in the loss.
For the Mount, they shot 76-percent (13-of-17) from the charity despite shooting only 35-percent (19-of-54) from the field. Carter led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. Kathleen Belanger-Finn added 14 points and five boards in the victory.
Maryland Eastern Shore begins a four-game road swing with a pair of conference games. On Dec. 5, the Lady Hawks travel to Durham, N.C. where the North Carolina Central Eagles await. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Two days later (Dec. 7), UMES stays in the Tar Hill state to face MEAC Preseason Favorite North Carolina A&T State. Game is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Savannah State Falls to Georgia Southern
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women’s basketball team (1-4) battled with Georgia Southern University (1-3), but came up short in a 64-48 loss in Tiger Arena as the Eagles shot 60 percent (12-for-20) in the second half, including shooting 7-for-10 (70 percent) behind the 3-point line.
Junior guard Kenyata Hendrix led the team with 12 points and added two rebounds, while sophomore guard Deyja Brown and junior center Tiyonda Davis led the Lady Tigers with six rebounds each. Brown added nine points and Davis added seven points and junior guard Rhianna Warren added nine points and two rebounds.
The Eagles were led by Angel McGowan with 19 points, Patrice Butler with a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Abby Hix and Alexis Sams with 10 points each.
The Lady Tigers hit the road for a six-game road stand starting with Alabama State University on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
