WASHINGTON, D.C. – Devin Martin scored a career-high 34 points including 23 in the second half as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) stopped American University 79-64 at Bender Arena.
The Hawks (2-10, 0-2 MEAC) trailed 37-33 at the break after leading for most of the first half. A late run by the Eagles and a 24-14 advantage in the paint helped them out to a lead.
But the second half was a whole different story as the UMES ratcheted up the defensive pressure forcing 12 American turnovers.
The Hawks only turned the ball over twice in the second half after coughing it up 10 times in the first.
Dominique Elliott also stepped up in the second half, scoring six of his 15 points but more importantly grabbing five rebounds and playing better defense in the paint. Bakari Copeland contributed 10 points.
The Hawks shot 55 percent from the floor, made 7-of-16 from behind the arc and outrebounded the Eagles 26-24.
UMES returns home to take on Central Penn on Dec. 22 at 4 p.m. as part of a men’s and women’s doubleheader.
