South Carolina State Falls to Central Arkansas

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Maggie Proffitt had a game-high 16 points to lead the University of Central Arkansas women’s basketball team to a 51-38 win over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon in the Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic at UNF Arena.

UCA improves to 9-1 on the season with the win, while SC State falls to 6-4.

Brianna Mullins had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Sugar Bears and Raquel Logan grabbed a game-high 12 boards.

Brittany Drumgoole led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points. JaQuanna Murray had six rebounds and matched her career-high of four blocks, while Jasmine Coleman also had six rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs have some time off for the holidays before they return to action on Dec. 30 with a 7 p.m. game at Jacksonville University.

Late Rally Falls Short as Norfolk State falls to Marshall

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Visiting Norfolk State cut a double-digit deficit to as little as four in the fourth quarter, but host Marshall outscored the Spartans 14-4 to close the game and pull away for an 81-67 win on Sunday afternoon at the Henderson Center.

The Spartans remain winless on the year at 0-9, while the Thundering Herd improved to 8-1 with the victory.

Kayla Roberts led four NSU players in double figures with 20 points. Kiara Phillips scored a season-high 16, Yazmen Hannah added 14 and Siobhan Beslow notched her fourth-double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Talequia Hamilton paced Marshall with 17 points and Leah Scott added 15.

The Spartans have the next eight days off from competition for the holidays before returning to action against La Salle in the Monmouth Hawk Holiday Classic in West Long Branch, N.J., on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Tate-DeFreitas scores 25 in Hampton loss

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women’s basketball team clawed its way within one possession in the closing seconds Sunday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center, but Lehigh escaped with a 63-56 win.

The Lady Pirates fell to 1-9 on the season.

Malia Tate-DeFreitas dropped a game-high 25 points on 10-for-25 shooting, hitting three 3-pointers, to move her way into fifth on the program’s all-time scoring list. She has 1,466 points in 75 career games, and she is 68 points shy of Rachel Butler (1,534 points, 2004-08) for fourth.

She also had three assists, tied for the team high with K’lynn Willis.

Ryan Jordan recorded her first double-double of the season, racking up a season-high 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Willis scored a season-high eight points.

Kaylah Lupoe had eight points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks.

The Lady Pirates struggled offensively, going 23-for-72 (31.9 percent) from the floor and hitting six of their 26 3-pointers (23.1 percent). Hampton was also 4-for-12 from the free throw line, and despite forcing25 Lehigh turnovers, the Lady Pirates only converted those into 16 points.

The Lady Pirates will be in Miami, Fla. on Dec. 28-29 for the Surfing Santa Classic.
