Wildcats net 100 in victory over Warner

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Kendra Cooper scored a game- and season-high 24 points Tuesday night, pacing four Wildcats in double-figures scoring as Bethune-Cookman rolled over Warner University, 100-28, in non-conference women’s basketball action at Moore Gymnasium.

Bethune-Cookman (5-5) erupted for 100 points for the first time since 1991-92, when the Wildcats took down Edward Waters by a score of 106-65, then under the direction of head coach Alvin B. Wyatt, Sr. Tuesday night’s victory also represented the largest margin of victory for women’s basketball in B-CU history.

Cooper led the Wildcats in scoring with her 24-point outburst on 8-of-14 shooting from the field – adding four (4) three-pointers in the process. She would go on to hand out seven assists.

Joining Cooper in the double-figures scoring column was Angel Golden with 22 points – 18 coming from beyond the arc, as she also picked up five steals on defense. Brown chipped in with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Kailyn Williams poured in 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Williams also registered five blocks.

Lyndsey Edwards contributed three blocked shots, while Taylor Houston added a career-best 11 rebounds.

For Warner, they were led by Kayla Guerrero, Kashari James and Shakes with six points each. Isis Mance added four points and six rebounds in a losing effort.

Bethune-Cookman hits the road for the remainder of the 2015 calendar year, traveling next to nearby DeLand, Florida for the two-day Stetson Hatter Classic. The Cats open against Georgia State on Sunday, December 20, at 3 p.m. They conclude the Classic with Georgia Southern the following day, once again at 3 p.m.

Cold Shooting Costs Lady Eagles Road Loss to Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior Chantal Thomas led North Carolina Central University with 10 points but the Lady Eagles shot an icy 22.2-percent from the floor in a 60-37 non-conference road loss at Wofford College on Tuesday afternoon inside Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Junior forward Grayson Pinholser notched her first double-double of the season and freshman guard Chloe Wanick netted 12 points as the Terriers won their second straight game. Wofford (3-7 Overall) shot nearly 15 points higher than NCCU at 36.7-percent and came up with a season-high 13 steals to post its most lopsided victory.

NCCU returns to South Carolina for two more non-conference games before the holiday break. The Lady Eagles will play at USC Upstate on Saturday (2 PM) and Presbyterian College (5 PM) on Monday.

Buie leads Savannah State with 10 points in loss to Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Sophomore forward Shanikwa Buie led the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (2-6) with 10 points as the Lady Tigers fell to Jacksonville State (4-6) 50-35 Tuesday night in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Buie shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from the floor and added seven rebounds, while junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw led the team with eight rebounds and added six points, two assists and a steal. 

Junior center Tiyonda Davis added six points, on 3-for-6 shooting, five rebounds and three blocks, while junior guard Kenyata Hendrix added four rebounds and junior forward Jeremica Edwards added five points and three rebounds.

The Gamecocks were led by Courtney Strain and Tyler Phelion with 10 points each, while Phelion added 11 rebounds for a double-double. 

The Lady Tigers travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State on Sunday, Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. ET.

Lady Rattlers stave off Clark-Atlanta 98-88 in overtime

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers (4-6, 0-1 MEAC) staved off a valiant effort by the Panthers of Clark-Atlanta (1-9) in overtime to take away a 98-88 win, today at Epps Gymnasium.  The win was the first in a three-game road trip which began today in Atlanta and concludes Sunday in Los Angeles, Calif.

Kenya Dixon led all scorers with 25 points, on 9-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from the three-point arc.  Olivia Antilla scored 24 points for the Lady Rattlers, nailing three triples, while Dawn king added 20 points, shooting an efficient 7-of-11 from the field.  Khadejra Young chipped in 13 points to round out the quartet of Lady Rattlers in double-figures scoring.

Mycelia Jones, led the Panthers with 21 points.  She has been the leading scorer for CAU in each of the team’s 10 games.  Gia Banks scored 20, Siera Bubb added 16, Whitney Collins contributed 12 and Sydni Davis scored 11 points to include a quintet of Panthers in double-figures scoring.  Bubb would add 12 rebounds to het till, completing her third double-double of the season. 

The Lady Rattlers sealed the game with a smothering defensive effort in overtime.  They forced CAU into 1-of-9 shooting in the extra frame, conceding only four points, while going 3-of-8 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line in overtime.

The Lady Rattlers will have a travel day tomorrow as they head to the West coast, to Los Angeles, to play in the Women of Troy Classic on the campus of the University of Southern California.  The Lady Rattlers will face the Trojans on Fri., Dec. 18 at 6 p.m.

UMBC escapes with overtime win over Lady Hawks

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In a contest that saw nine lead changes and eight ties, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Team fell in overtime against the UMBC Retrievers, 55-52, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. This was the first time in the series’ history where the game was decided in extra periods.

Guard Moengaroa Subritzky opened overtime with a long ball, followed by a made free throw from senior center Taryana Kelly, 52-48. For the Lady Hawks, those would be the only points scored in the extra period as the Retrievers recorded the final seven points to win, 55-52.

Defensively, the Lady Hawks (3-8) held UMBC under 29-percent (19-of-67) shooting from the field and less than six-percent (1-of-17) from downtown. Despite the smothering defense, the Retrievers found other ways and keep themselves in the contest.

UMBC scored 20 points off turnovers and registered 21 second chances points. Also, the Retrievers outscored UMES’ bench, 23-8.

Subritzky led the way, playing all 45 minutes, a new career-high. The New Zealand native recorded a season-high 18 points, five boards, and two dimes. Senior guard TeAmber Burke nearly duplicated minutes played as she finished with a career-high 44 minutes of action. Burke tallied 12 points and a season-high eight rebounds in a losing effort.

For the Retrievers (7-3), they shot nearly 89-percent (16-of-18) from the charity stripe. Taylor McCarley led the way, finishing with a game-high 20 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the foul line. Garner notched 14 points and seven boards off the bench while Wilson chipped in a game-high 10 rebounds in the victory.

UMES will have five days until the No. 5 Maryland Terrapins come into town (Dec. 20). Sunday afternoon’s showdown begins at 1 p.m. inside the Hytche Center.
